Because rebooting is for adding new hardware.
End of story.
Of course I update my kernel. Once, right after the initial install to make sure everything is tweaked just how I like it, and then again when I add new hardware! :D :D :D
Just couldn't resist thread_killer. I really meant kernel updates not hardware tweaks ;) I mainly use FreeBSD so I'm used to doing a make world on a regular basis and having to reboot when it updates my kernel.
Ok..im getting Slack 9.0 But will programs like AIM still work ? I heard somewhere you have to get a ported version, what is that?
do I have to be good at programing and command crap to use *nix?
I personally have never even SEEn any OS besides windows and MAC, I'm getting kind of anxious to get into all this *nix stuff but I was wondering whats the best one for making it look really cool? Like a really flashy workspace? I want to be entertained. :D
I'm also tired of all of Microsnots bull ****.
Not if you get one of the more commercial distributions.Quote:
But you will get good, I promise you that.
Which is one hell of a reason to go out there and try it.
Download the iso for RedHat 9 now.

Unix was designed by scientists for scientists
MS was designed in a garage by two guys that wanted to make money
Unix was made to do complex calculations for multiple users simultaneously.
MS was made for home office and small business. Great for writing documents, spread sheets and keeping track of contacts.
*nix comes bundeled with many GPL networking tools
windows comes with the basic things they’ve stolen.
Up until recently win didn’t support the raw sockets necessary for packet spoofing and other things. It also didn’t have Pcap libs, a good scripting language and many other features used in hacking. Since many of these great things are being ported over to windows its not as essential to have *nix as in the past but it’ll be a long time if ever until windows users (not micro-soft itself) completely catch up.
