Well, we just got power in Downtown Toronto. The last time this happened was November 9, 1965 and there were riots, etc. This time things seemed calmer. Individuals in Toronto took up directing traffic and people remained calm. We managed to find a place that had pizza (we got the last one) and for the most part we didn't see too much profiteering (we saw one hotdog stand selling hotdogs for $3, up $1 from it's regular $2 -- we're reporting him).
Maybe this is a good time to start a discussion about whether privatising 'vital' services is/was a good idea or not...
What if people start sueing the electricity company responsible for the outage (if any), and that company goes broke? Who's going to supply electricity to those parts of the country then? Just some things to ponder...
Well, that's happened in parts of Canada (Ontario specifically). Power Generation, aka Ontario Hydro, is the largest distributor of power in Ontario and was formerly publically owned. I don't know if they can be sued over this as a) they informed the public months ago when we had our first heat wave in Ontario to be careful with their usage b) from reports I've been hearing a plant caught fire. Acts of God are probably covered in the agreement.
Given how rapidly they are returning power -- they had said 100% within hours rather than days -- I'd be surprised if anyone did sue.
