The slang term for what they are doing is fishing , it is very likley a spammer, who will harvest the accounts and use them to spam with. And then the poor dumbass who gave away there account info gets blamed/banned.

I compared the source on both the fake and real sites real quick like and found several http addresses on the fake that did not correspond the real site. One of these is the person or persons that is trying to do you wrong…with a little work you will be able to find them too.
oh sorry if this offends but what is a senior member of AO doing on AOL is that not the lowest form of the internet.
To answer the question ” Once these phonies get screen names and passwords, what can they do with them?
”
AOL has a whole different world of hacking, which is quite lame and disgusting for the most part. I must admit I am guilty at expressing certain interest in this myself, but that’s about 3 years ago. You can go to rooms like phishy, physhy1, etc, or cerver, cerver1, etc to learn more about this stuff. They have these little programs that run in the chat room and make it nearly impossible to chat. Cerver rooms actually have bots running that allow you to receive emails of software lists which you can request in that same room and it will get sent to you in email. There is plenty stuff to do in AOL, but you wouldn’t want to do half of it on your real screen name. So to answer your question they can use your screen name to get other screen names, ( by emailing Trojans that steal aol passwords, etc). They can do certain small illegal activities the net connecting to aol through TCP/IP, that way it doesn’t display their ISP’s IP. Moreover you can change IPs by logging off and back onto different accounts in aol through TCP/IP. Screen names can also be traded for credit card nubers, calling card #s, etc. It used to be possible to connect to aol on up to 10 different accounts at the same time, and then you can have some fun in a chat room, but I think they fixed that.
Anyway, basically aol sux and everything about it sux. Security is weak and there is more smap and AOL's advertisement then anywehere else, and you pay more then any other service, but I am sure you allready know that.
I've gone trough things like this b4 where someone put a 'hotmail like' interface inside a localhost in my faculty. Then set it as home in every pc in the lab. For some geeks, they just put in their pwd and login, then press <enter>.. .. all the pwds and account names have been logged in some database.. next, y'all know what happen to their accounts... just be careful..
anyway...this time, 1800 flowers.... next time, maybe www.hotmail.com ;) .
there used to be a bug in hotmail where u could include javascript in your email which would be run when you opened an email - a friend of mine (she wasn't very net savy) got hit with a trojan and the lamer using it stole her hotmail username and pass - now i know u hear this all the time....but i was talking to him through her name on msn (he tried to mail bomb me - idiot has he never heard of mail filters >_< - heh and then tried emoticon bombing as well....hrm and he doesn't no u can turn those off - lol) so as a matter of pride i decided to retrieve her password......now the guy was connected to her and could see everything we typed so had to get rid of that first - got friend to run round with outpost burnt to cd - she cuts connection installs and restarts no more connection so talked her through removing sub7......then went after gettin it back (i know i should have contacted [email protected] but i was young and eager :P) so i used to bug with the javascript so that when he opened an email i had sent him it redirected him to a mock-up of the hotmail "please re-enter password" screen (the one u get when timed out) page i had made but which instead of logging him in emailed me password and then sent him back 2 inbox - worked a treat :)
the javascript bug however was fixed so dont be worrying about the same thing happening...but be on look out for similiar tricks
