The newer ones are prettier/fancier , You will be forced to learn more with the older ones cause there is not as much reliance on the gui. But i don't know if 6 is any way supported anymore , i know a lot of people still use and love 7.3 though.

If you want to learn Linux quickly, have the time and patience, and have an older system then install your RH 6 with no GUI.
If you want to learn Linux quickly, have some time and patience, and have a newer system then install your RH 9 with no GUI.
If you want to learn, but want to go at your own pace and see what Linux really has to offer, load RH 9 with the default GUI.
In any case, make sure you read the documentation completely, and refer to Linux.org frequently.
