Help Virus!

I can recommend the Ad-aware too.... i run an AVG virus scanner and it does the job nicely, but after browsing the web looking for a game i got some "supposedly" Virus scan message saying that it detected a Trojan horse virus and that i should run my virus scan....it turned up with nothing though, a search for the file the message said the virus was in also came out blank...i went to BITDEFENDER and ran the online virus scan, that came up with nothing as well, so as a last resort i downloaded the free edition of Ad-aware and it found no less than a 104 "suspicious" files....i guess the trojan horse was among those, cuz i didn't get the message again :)

I do not think so. My dad bought it and he does not support piracy. It did not even ask for a CD-Key when I installed though. Also, it is 6.0 :) I am running RegProt so I only let it add keys when I am installing something I have scanned for viruses. I do use Ad-Aware 6 and have nothing currently on my computer. AVG also turned nothing up.

I have seen something similar ages ago. If you updated the software, it actually did the update, but did not update the array, table or whatever that it kept the data in. I suggest that you look into your Norton files and manually run the update program.

Also look at the signature/definition files and be sure that they are in the same folder. You might find two of them, one dated 1999. Try renaming it as .old or .txt, then reboot, and see what it thinks its date is. If there is only one, the update is not working, and you will have to visit the Norton site and follow the manual update procedures.

Try using Panda Remover(trial version will also help).If its some virus it will surely get rid of it.Also uninstall or disable nav @startup to avoid conflict between the 2 products,

I am not sure as I haven't used Norton for a while, I think that they are .def files? Logically it will be the largest file with an unrecognisable extension, and hopefully, the most recent?

I did hear that Semantec were getting more aggressive in their support policy for home user products :(

My main complaint is that they don't seem to make this clear? so there must be quite a few people out there who think that they are updating when they are not?

Try AVG from Grisoft.............it is quite good, updated regularly, and is free for private users.

Don't use "pirate" AV or firewall software..............you never know what you are getting :rolleyes:

You asked where the dat files were located. On both NAV 5.0, ver 7.0 (2001) & ver 9.0 (2003) you'd look for the dat files at:

C:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\SymantecShared\VirusDefs

I guess that that works for ver. 6.0. I went directly from ver 5.0 Win95) to ver 7.0.(Win98).
Never tried ver. 6.0 (2000).
