i did once found quite a few some even i had forgotten about - i also did searches for peple i might know from my local area - came up with quite a few results there too ....... mostly profile pages for different things but did happen across some pics and things which were quite amusing

As, I've only got 2 sites actually hosted, one would think that they'd both be in use, but alas one of them has been hogging my time, regardless of how easy I make it for my "client" to update his crap. Instead it is a constant battle to keep up with stuctural changes. I haven't even finished the damned thing because bands are fickle. Particularly bands that are a studio project formally comprised of boy + girlfriend, now comprised of just boy... So now all the media that I created image maps for (eventhough I HATE imagemaps and tried to convince him of something less bandwidth hoggy, fricken DSL users...), is being pulled. Which makes a third of the site dissapear in a flash. Not to mention that I've been desperately erasing all traces of "her" from the site and making a "Vocalist Needed" page.
So much for freelancing to supplement my unemployed stature. And now, you'd think I'd learn my lesson and not do sites for bands, but NO, I'm doing another one. *SIGH* I'm a glutton for punnishment. Fortunately this other band is comprised of just guys, so they won't have a tragic heart-wrenching break-up...
Ok, sorry, I'm venting.
My site that is out of date is just chilling until I can buy a domain name and move it to a site with PHP/SQL so that I can make it even that much more spiffy. It is my senior project from college outlining my own philosophy. So, once I get the back-end figured out, then I'll have to spend significant hours updating the content foud on my old site so that the new version isn't just a flashier copy of the old one.
First ranting, now babbling, can I say anything concisely?

I've had this discussion with quite a few people on IRC over the past few months.
One of the things I've noticed besides a ton of outdated sites is the abundance of portals/communities popping up all over with a lack of content or direction. It can be frustrating, at times, because they're your friends, but you can't really see signing up at 'just another site' with a lack of anything worth reading. If I want news, I have news sites to go to. You're not offering me anyting unique, whatsoever.
Tons of people on AO have their own security sites. They're the standard phpBB or the standard PHPNuke. Nothing distinguishes them from the abundance of crap that circulates on the internet except for the fact that it's someone you know.
Why do the sites die out and get left abandoned to the void in cyberspace?
Because the content, or lack thereof, is completely unoriginal. Everyone and their best friend has a useless portal. When my list of site memberships begin to exceed the number of sites I actually visit in a day, that should be a sign. If you can't be unique in a space full of cliche, don't expect to last.
And for GOD'S SAKE, knock of the portal/community trend, unless you intend to do something no one has ever seen before.

oops I just started a new portal/forum - its not unique as there are plenty of similar ones out there but it does serve a purpose - as its the only (that I know of) AO Clan site ;)
it prolly wouldn't be intresting to anyone but those who wish to play CS - its not anything special it just......is ;)
but I understand what your saying GG - there are so many different forums/portals now that its hard to keep track - and alot them have nothing intresting to read
but sometimes a friends forum can be a just a fun place to hangout and just have a laugh without having to worry about breaking any of the site rules - like some of the junk i post elsewhere I would never get away with here at AO

In seriousness here, yes, I do understand the portal thing. I had a portal once and it went all to hell for a number of reasons I will not get into. However, my biggest problem with that place was all your focus on a forum/portal is the amount of work, putting out fires and babysitting you need to do. With all that ****, you lose focus on what the stupid portal was for in the first place and the content goes on the back burner.
In all honesty, I have signed up at a number of sites and portals that friends have made, but do not visit them because they are boring or do not offer anything interesting. That's one of the reasons why I went away from the portal/forum thing because there are already 20,000,000,000,000 of them I can visit.
Oh yeah, one more thing. If you plan to make a portal, at least make it eye-catching. I get really tired of the same skin. People slap a canned skin and say "See my site?" **yawn**
I tried to set up a very distinct philosophy forum only to discover that I could gain a hardcore membership of roughly thirty members. Thats enough though as its pretty specialised, luckily I can delele my board and I think I might be soon.
