I must support Deaflamb. Knoppix is really a great distro to discover Linux (in a first time) and the *nix world (in a second time).
Simply begin to play with all the various utilities you will quickly find, and learn at your own rhythm. The only thing you must avoid, is to keep yourself stuck to your graphical interface. It is very common for Windows and Mac users to limit themselves in their *nix discovering, because of an irrational fear of the command prompt.
Command line is the real Unix power.

Once you get comfy there, look into a program called Fink( http://fink.sourceforge.net ). It is a spiffy package manager, similar to apt, which is what Debian Linux users..., um..., use to get their linux programs. Combine that with Apple's X11 (which you can find at apple's site), and you have a Unix box that you can use without constantly having to be a Unix guru.
apt get is used for alot actually. its used to upgrade the OS, packages installed, install new packages....basically anything to do with installing and maintaining software you can use apt get for. Some packages wont work though because of dependencies and so on. but it's really not that hard.
i agree with him though, you really do not seem to know a whole lot about OSs in general, so you may want to first try getting your hands dirty in the little world of apple, which isnt easy because they hide everything from you. but try that first.
