Ok thanks for answering....in fact i am not interested in doing sth like that (at least for now!!!just kidding) but i just wanted to know that because an i-know-everything-guy told me that he could trace people (with dynamic ips) that had compomised before..and he is not so good in S.E.....:p so that is why i asked....anyway thanks

You can try www.ip2location.com also www.samspade.org but to pinpoint someones location I'm not sure if you can do it by just the IP address alone. I heard rumors of software that could convert IP addresses to Telephone numbers but I'm not sure.

tyfon,
You can safely tell the i-know-everything-why-do-I-say-dumb-things-guy, that he can't do it with dynamic IP's. And if he continues to insist that he can, by all means you pick several IP's and let him prove it. You'll be rolling on the floor listening to all of his excuses. As our other members have said nope not likely by him. and the reasons they stated are true. If he was that elite he wouldn't be saying anything. ;)

... I think this may be because your ISP has purchased it's IP pool from another company (one that was located in the Netherlands) . I'm basing this on the fact that when i was with BT Broadband (uk ISP) i used one of those location programs to identify the physical location of my IP, and it told me i was also somewhere in the Netherland. It also told me the "owner company" of the IP which i discovered (via their website) was a IP pool selling company that was based in the Netherlands.

tyfon> you say that they were compromised before? Well, it is possible that he might have installed a remote access trojan in which case you could go through the files and find anything pointing to their location. Or a keystroke logger and is capturing bill too addresses from websites thhe person visits... but other then that.. I don't think so.

I can't believe this thread is still going on. Every single IP-tracing tool mentioned here has been unabled to locate me, and I have a static IP address. Therefore, the chances of them being able to accurately track the location of a dynamic IP address are virtually nil. End of story.

Static vs. Dynamic
If your friend has a dynamic ip address, it is impossible to discover his location. But if he has a static (non-changing) ip address, and he owns the number, your in luck. If you whois his static ip address (ARIN is your best chance), you will get his exact location including his street number. Businesses usually have static ip addresses. Regular people like you and me, have a dynamic ip address (changes often) if you attempt to look up a dynamic, chances are it will go to his isp (not necessarily his closest ISP location).

Ok, try looking up this static IP: 81.168.90.101 and see if you can find my *exact* location, including street number. Let me know where you found the information if you manage to.
