The Smoothwall is a great and cheap alternative indeed.
It has many nice and easy to administer functions. Also I did some testings and it detects lots of things just fine, and doesn't get fooled easily.
Advantage : Cheap , cause distro is free and you can use an old box to put in front of your switch or router. Easy portforwording etc. etc ....
Disadvantage : To fully understand and administer the box some linux-knowledge is needed ( I wouldn't call it a disadvantage, but for M$ users it is :p)

thanx guys ... that really helped ... i did some research (as I should) and decided to go w/ cisco 806...

rabit: Are you familiar with the cisco IOS? You're are going to need to be very familiar with it.
If you run into problems, let me know.
The CRWS is good for getting the WAN interface setup.
After that, I'd blow away the http server and do it via command line. I've had the CRWS corrupt my config. They recommend you to use one or the other CLI or CRWS. So, I'd stick with CLI. Just get the info for your wan interface first.
I can give you my config (slightly modified to remove usernames and passwords and such) If you need something to look over. PM if if you want it. However, I'm on DSL, not cable. My config is going to look more like a config for a ISDN line... (they are very similar)

do you know what exactly is the difference between 806 & 831 ... they seem to be about the same price.... ... which one is easier to use...
also ...
what's the ...IOS
what's the ...CRWS
what's the ...CLI
no i'm no afraid to set it up and learn it ... maybe this is the start... the office runs still fine on a cheap NETGEAR ($29.99) so i will take my time w/ the set up...
to start i just want to configure it to get dynamic IP from outside and 192.168.0.1 (or whatever) from the inside...
any other advice...

I'm not sure of the differences, you'll have to read the DOCs.
The IOS is a propritary interoperating system.
CRWS is the web setup utility that you usually see with other products like linksys.
CLI is the command line interface. Its similar to dos command line or unix command line.
The IOS has to be configured either with the CRWS or from CLI.
The CRWS is still buggy though. (last time I used it, but that was almost a year ago)
