Actually AlienWare ain't that expensive here in Aus.
Carn't figure that one out yet..
Anyhow even though htere expensive and all, i find that it handles the abuse that i give it well.
Fine i spent a bit on it after i brought it, only because it didn't have the specs that i needed.
But once you got it just the way that you need it there a dream, just like driving a brand knew car.
cheers
.:front2back:.
And yes it is true, turn up to your next LAN party with an AlienWare laptop, and you'll have everyones attention..

Zonewalker ,
You are quite right! but if you look at the dates on their site they have only been around for the last 6 months...................takes a while for information to filter out here in the "sticks" :)
The one I looked at was my brother-in-law's............. about 18 months ago..............
Very nice, but I did not think that it was particularly good £/$ value.
coolbean , if you are filling up HDDs then you certainly need a RW Cd if not a DVD?...........If you are going to keep the old machine I would look at an external one, then you can use it with both machines and improve your $ value ratio?
As a general rule of thumb, I don't like running a machine with more than 75% of the HDD utilised..............it won't defragment properly for a start. When you get to around 90% then MS Office apps really slow down.................DON'T try running Access on that old box..........you will be there forever (you won't be able to compress the database) :D
Cheers

Look for something with
Pentium M for Processor
512 of Memory
Good Video Card
Good Speaker (Laptop Speaker SUCK BAD)
CD-RW/Dvd-Rom Combo.
Wireless
Centrino Laptop is the best. Do alot of testing with the mouse on the laptop. Some people love TouchPad, some like Pointing Device. Be sure you get the one you like. Good Luck

The Sager seems to have a nice price/product ratio. Does it have the same
quality as Alienware?
-
I'll recommend that you go to the forums here to determine that for yourself :: http://notebookforums.com/
I don't own a Sager (or any notebook) so I can't offer any personal expirence... BTW, the Sager forums there have a ton of information / reviews / support etc., and a lot of people who would probably be willing to help. But make sure to search before asking, since apparently AW vs Sager comes up a bit there or older members don't like seeing that question.
Hopefully your laptop selection will go well. Keep us informed :)
And I figured out that whole painting thing. Alienware and Sager and some other companies get thier laptops from a company called Clevo ( http://www.clevo.com.tw/ ), and resell them. Alienware paints the laptops awesome colors and puts the sweet graphics and logos on and of course the price. So basically they are the same laptop in the heart (or shape), but with different exteriors (and some hardware) and prices. Check it out and notice that they really are from the same basic laptops... But I doubt you'd turn as many heads at LAN parties with a Sager unless people pay close attention.
