Never had a problem with Firefox, perhaps yours isnt configured correctly? Try reinstalling it while under root, that could be a potential problem (Installing it as user). If that isnt a problem, then run it with default configuration. If it doesnt work with the default config, then the problem could be more complex than we had previously hoped.

Alright, I'm stumped...??? Did you try to reinstall like someone suggested earlier? Perhaps there's an issue with the user's account under which it was installed (surely not, I have Firefox installed on several of the computers at my university at the user level, and all access mail sites just fine)... very mysterious... perhaps you could install the regular old Mozilla browser and see if you have the same problem... oh, and BTW, what kind of error message do you get when attempting to access Yahoo!? Perhaps you could list all of your settings from the Tools>\Options menu for the rest of us to compare and contrast with...

I would suggest you do as was suggested above.
1) go to start > control panel > add/remove programs -- and uninstall firefox.
2) download a new and uncorrupted copy of firefox from the Mozilla web page
3) install the new downloaded copy of firefox
4) leave at default settings
5) try to access hotmail and yahoo again
6) report back to us the results
There, I made it a step by step process. IF YOU FOLLOW IT EXACTLY THEN WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO PIN POINT WHERE IT IS BREAKING DOWN, IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED BY THE REINSTALLATION.
By substituting your own methodes, and skipping portions just makes it more of a guessing game on our parts. It alsowastes your time and ours, especially if we assume that you are following all the steps.

If all other options have failed, download a program that lets you spoof your user agent (just search mozilla user agent or whatever on google) and set it to IE 6.0. I'm not sure if MS is still allowed to make sure only IE can use their websites or not...
