I am sorry but i got a bit bothered by the comment that a proxy will hide you. This wont work because the requests you are making still need to pass trough the local network and your admin is god on there, and can listen in on any traffic you are sending. The one way you might be able to do this is to build a encrypted path to a proxy and i don't think any free proxys that provide that service but i could be mistaken, maybe somebody can slap me down if i am wrong.
No. You're quite correct unless it's an internal proxy that someone else is running (basically, another way into the network that by-passes the firewall). If it is that kind of scenario, then there is a large security risk and by-passing it will probably violate any AUPs that might be in existence for the college/university.Quote:

As for the encrypted tunnel, that might work. A search through Google should turn up proxies that support things like SSH tunnelling, whereby you could run the "shareware" program through -- possibly.
Personally, I think this is a lot of hassle. Better to download the songs you want at home, burn to CD(s) and bring that in. Then you don't have to worry about it.
I didn't mean the proxy will hide him completely but if you are gonna check your mail through a proxy online ... the admin would have a hard time monitoring that ...
Offcourse he knows you are using a proxy.
And if you're gonna download stuff the administrator will know as wel but it will not pass through the firewall on the network so it will not attract imediate attention.
Offcourse this only works if you have a proxy installed on a box inside the network with on that same box an internetconnection (like ADSL).
If you add a proxy in your browser it gets routed over the firewall but as far as I know the only thing you can see is the proxyaddress (correct me if I'm wrong).
Maybe as di0strb suggested the admin can then sniff the traffic but then we would be talking about a stage further if the guy allready is suspected of things.
So sorry if my explanation was confusing.

Chances are Universities have weak monitoring controls, if any. The nature of most universities, that is real one's that are state of federally funded have open policies regarding communication outside of sheltered laboritories, like dorms etc. Chances are you aren't but a look on the IT web site or asking will get you the answer (like many posted). Oh and damn nihil, hope that beer tasted good. Maybe you need to get a good shag in. :D
I wouldn't bet on this. I was amazed at how attentive our college is (we're publically funded) to the traffic. In addition, with recent crackdowns, I suspect many universities and colleges are looking less towards open concept and more towards monitoring what is going on over their networks.Quote:

I would agree, we had a genius for an it guy and he knew everybody who knew dos/linux on campus.
It helped that he was the MS server and Novel server prof.
and If you asked real nice he would open a port on the switch BUT he would sample all packets with statefull inspection and keep a real close eye on us.
When someone trashed the lan (only once) he hunted us all down and chewed our a$$es out then made US fix it, then he changed all the passwords and closed our ports for the semester.
I learned that a lan is for internal data transfer not a personal sandbox to play in.
If you want your own little sandbox to play in get your own broadband connection and pay for it yourself,

I can see your point. Perhaps the board of directors view lawsuits by corporations as a threat to their school. Piracy is one thing but forcing universities to close their minds because of supposed loss profit irks the hell out of me. I just did a few pings of known university holes I have and they are still there, but perhaps you are correct MSM and schools will begin locking down their policy. In which case that will be an expensive endeavor and one of cat and mouse. It's the inherent curiosity and rebellious nature of college student that will have the faculty on their toes in a constant battle for access to P2P and chats etc. The problem is, in many cases I bet the students are more resourceful and more determined. :D
That open trend could be changing, but I bet many of the big one's in the US don't even have firewalls in the general student population.
Contrary to the above commentz i don't think u'r admin will be able to track u that easily.
You said that u use a notebook with the option of obtain ip automatically...
Now along with u'r ip if u can change the hostname too, then the admin cannot be sure which computer is exactly connecting to the network...
and even if he finds a lot of activity from a particular ip, then he can at the maximum bar that ip...but since u'r comp getz a new ip everytime, itz not a problem as you can obtain another ip..
But one thing...along with your downloading n'all don't open u'r mail or anything that may give u'r admin hints as to who u are...
It also makes a difference weather u'r connecting only via a gateway...
or a proxy and firewall are also involved...
Oh and to support proxy tunneling i'd say dat...
you can continuously change u'r ip whille downloading u'r tunneling software...
and then possibly u can configure u'r comp 2 tunnel u'r network...
but the admin will realise dat there iz a lot of traffic from somewhere...
so u should be carefull...itz not a very gud idea
in d last comment i meant u'r admin will NOT be able 2 trace u dat easily....
