Heck i didn't even get it.Quote:

Plus there's nothing wrong with being a Debian lover like myself :)

ugh it isn't that hard to understand >_<;
/// on a distant automobile forum far far away
User - My new car rocks
*Gentoo Users magically appears in a flash of light and puff of smoke
GentooUser - Gentoo is better!!!!
*User confused
User - Ummm isn't that an OS?
GentooUser - Yeah, and its better!!!
User - But we're not talking about OS's
GentooUser - Doesn't matter still better
User - But how can you even compare the 2 - they are 2 completly different things!
GentooUser - Completly different cause Gentoo r0wks!!
User - Ummm ah huh ok then
*User walks away slowly

Ok so is an extreme example - but what pooh was trying to get across is no matter on what forum - or where an OS is discussed - even without any mention of the word Gentoo...a gentoo user will appear and start telling everyone - that no matter what task they are discussing that an operating system can perform Gentto does it better.

Gentoo is like totally sooooo for sure better! I mean, who would have thought of a command for updating everything like them? Well, besides Free BSD almost 20 years ago, but hey! Gentoo does it better!!!!!! Even if it is almost exactly the same damned thing!!!
I mean damn, who wouldn't want to have a computer down for over a day while doing the install????? That is so leet, like totally!
Pfft, like I was going to let this thread go without a responce.
Typing "yast2" in SuSE tends to update everything, in Free BSD you have "update world" and the portage collection, which is a cool idea, but then some bastard tossed it in a Linux distro, and now we have 2,000,000,000 dumb ****s thinking it was the first time it was ever done.
And as soon as you dare say it was NOT the first time, you get more flames than a fire. and when you PROVE it... Well then you get the intelligent come back "Oh, well Gentoo improved on it". Gentoo used to be a breed of penguine. Then it was a cool shell like explorer...Now it's a Free BSD Linux with originality problems.
This is why I love both of you. -hands you both cookies-
And this is all based on a two-day gentoo experience ... good judgement. And btw gore, you belong in windows, since you obviously don't understand the meaning of open source and the GPL.Quote:

Shrek, gore still has a solid point. And let me explain why. (G = Gentoo E= Everything else)Quote:
And this is all based on a two-day experience ... good judgement
1G. Gentoo has FLAGs and USE files to make optimization easier, such as -fomit-frame-pointer and -O3 (or -Os)
1E. EVERY SINGLE OTHER OS HAS THE EXACT SAME ABILITY. It just isn't called FLAGS. It's called "modify your compiler options"
2G. Gentoo has the ability to compile everything from source, still use the optimizations, and automagically call the USE flags to set the configure flags and depedencies.
2E. EVERY SINGLE OTHER OS HAS THE EXACT SAME ABILITY. It just isn't called FLAGS. It's called "modify your compiler options" as well as let swaret or slapt-get handle the depedencies on an --install.
3G. Gentoo gets the most speed and optimiations out of your computer by doing the above two things and compilng everything from source code.
3E. EVERY SINGLE OTHER OS HAS THE EXACT SAME ABILITY. It just isn't called FLAGS. It's called "modify your compiler options" as well as let swaret or slapt-get handle the depedencies on an --install as well as not having to
compile it because there are prebuilt packages already compiled by someone with the -fomit-frame-pointer on an i686 at Pentium IV(III) settings in tgz/rpm formats. Both with check depedencies.
And finally...
4G. Gentoo can update the entire system with emerge -uD world && emerge -uD system. Gentoo can install a program as simple as emerge programname.
4E. Slack has swaret --update && swaret --upgrade. Slack has slapt-get --update && slapt-get --upgrade. Redhat and Fedora have yum, up2date, and apt-get. Debian has apt-get. Windows has automatic update. All of these do systemwide updates easily. All of these do dep checks, easily. All of these can install programs (usually with the --install switch) from deposit mirrors. And finally, I don't care that Gnetoo has 72,000+ apps in portage sitting in source code. Google has, I'm sure, a few hundred thousand RPM files, and god knows how many slack compiled tgz packages.
My point being, and the point of the joke? No matter where anyone is, a Gentoo user will say that their OS is bigger, better, and faster. When it is doing the exact same thing every other OS can do, but in a different way. Note, not better, faster, or more 31337 way. A different way.
Let's not turn this into a flameOS war, because all of us here should be mature enough to know that an OS is only as powerful as the admin, and only as versitile as the admin's knowledge.
I should hit you for that Shrek. Both you and I know gore has a firm understanding of the GPL and open source. Just because he is willing to learn and master an OS that far too many people bash on, gives you no right to dishonor his knowledge. Why not instead try learning from him, so that you can see, as those of us who took the time to master windows did, that Windows can do and preform anything/as well as Gentoo can.Quote:
And btw gore, you belong in windows, since you obviously don't understand the meaning of open source and the GPL.
And that goes for every OS. OS != speed/security/superiority Adminknowledge == speed/security/superiority
Pooh, your point is very right and i do know gore knows his stuff. I'm just sick of it him bashing on gentoo, because it's me, because I stepped over from suse to gentoo.Quote:

And this behavior of gore is a very big contradiction to what he always announces here on AO, thus being a n OS knowledgeable person. He just hates gentoo because of me, and not because gentoo "should" be bad.
And i know there some pretty nice other distros too. I do have slack @ home too, I used FreeBSD for a fair bit. heck we even use HPUX @ work (still :| ) Just to mention a few I tried ...
Anyway, I respect you pooh, so i'll let the gore-gentoo rages be from now on ...
Don't get me wrong Shrekkie, I respect your opinions too :) But I know other people will be reading this wondering why two sides are giving each other such a hard time.
On one side, people think there are things that Gentoo can do that no other OS is capable of.
On the other side, people think Gentoo is as bad as Windows 1.2.
Both are wrong, and I would rather not see this joke turn into a flame war for OSes :) Let him rant, and he will let you continue to enjoy Gentoo. Either way, both opinions and thoughts were appreciated, even if it put the subject in a new light.
