Well, I've heard from a friend, whose XP(home) is unregistered, when logged on to internet(dialup), maybe sooner or later, a time window pops up showing that u have 60 secs. to save all documents within which Windows is gonna shut down. Then windows shuts down. Is it really coz. XP is unregistered, or some spy job ??
Is activation, the process of entering the code at the time of installation from CD?? Or activation is also something to be done online like registration ?
Entering the serial key is at the time of installation. Activation is when windows is installed and booted up, and it needs to be activated (approved that it is a legal copy).Quote:

Depends. Can he get back into Windows at all, or did it lock him out? Chances are it was the actual activation bugging him. Always activate guys... no reason not to. And no, cracking the copy so it 'activates' won't work either. If you legally own it, take advantage of activation so you can get the future updates and support.Quote:

Just to set things straight again:
At installation, you are required to provide the serial number. If you don't do that, you won't even be able to install Windows.
At installation, you are asked to register with MicroSoft. If you don't, nothing will happen (never ever). You have the option to have Windows bug you from time to time about registration, or not to bug you at all. Again: registration is not mandatory.
Then, after the installation is complete, you are asked to activate. If you don't activate (either by internet, by snail-mail, or by phone), you'll eventually be locked out. Activation is mandatory (with the exception of the Corporate edition).
Yes, that is correct. You can delay activation and all is said and good. You can even break it to never ask you again and thus fake being activated. However, VERY soon MS is requiring activatation (according to their databases) to use any windows updates, including SP2. Also very soon, activation is going to be used to track down piracy and prevention of spreading it. This means, don't hack it and activate it. That way you can get the updates, they know you are not pirating, and you won't find your copy suddenly not working in the very near future. (resources: slashdot, MSN news)Quote:

XNikon, what's happening to your friend sounds exactly like blaster.. Blaster only shuts down a computer when it is connected to the internet... Maybe you should fix it for him?
I enjoy the Windows OS's (except ME!) and a variety of Linux Distros. At home I dual boot several HDDs with the afore mentioned OS's to adjust to whatever trips my trigger at the time. One OS is not more secure than the other. The admin makes or breaks the security of his dominion regardless of it's size. The only disappointment I have is with respect to the home user activation and XP. If I wanted XP on all of the computers at home, unless I willing to step on the wrong side of the legal line, I would have to buy individual XP's for each computer I build at home. That's not true of some of the other OS's. Since I have 5 computers at home, I have put over $1000.00 just for XP, directly into Bill's pocket. How about some sympathy for the home user! Even the government gives us a better tax break than that and unlike MS, the government is in the red.... :eek:
But then everyone would shift to the home edition and MS would loose millions :rolleyes:
