Cheers everyone for your help and advice. I have tried all of your suggestions except a repair/restore using the original CD. I have found 2 other messages from people who have had the same problem. it seems that the registry or Login shell gets corrupted with the removal of the adaware. They have fixed the problem using a linux boot disk and a program called ERD Commanter to get into windows and either do a sys restore or edit the reg. I think I'll have a go at these and I'll Post back and let you all know the result.
Once again thanks for you help

ERD = Emergency Repair Disk.
The ERD would have been created *before* the problem happened so unless you have this disk, you are SOL (**** Outta Luck).
Groovicus , you are the man saved me loads of messing about, nailed it in one. Many thanks
thehorse13. Do a search on google foe ERD Commander and see what you find?? interesting!!
What wasn't mentioned and might work is that if booting into safe mode or using a restore point doesn't help, you might boot up to the installation CD and choose Repair. I have never went this far but some friends have and they were generally happy with the outcome. However, if this doesn't work, at least you have the CD handy to reinstall your OS :D
