Usually, unless you specified that you wanted a static IP when you got you cable account you are most likely using a dynamic connection. If so doing as the others have suggested (ie. power cycle the comp and the router) you should be able to change your IP.

I don't think that dynamic IP is everytime you connect because I have dynamic IP address and mine expires every so often but not everytime I connect..
This really depends on how your cable service runs there dynamic IP's... My town has 3 different cable providers for internet, and they ALL do their dynamic IP's different.Quote:

Atticus, yea that is basically what I meant. Like above, it all depends on your cable service. The one my friend has (charter) says to take the power out for 2 minutes. You get a new IP anytime you do that. Call the tech support for your cable company, they may be incompetent but they can tell you how to powercycle your modem because that is the main way they deal with problems (at least in my experience helping people get their cable working correctly).
typically when you type ipconfig /renew you are only renewing the lease that you have on the current ip address, what you want to do first is ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew. this makes it so that you release your IP address lease so someone else can take it, and then you are going to aquire a new lease with the dhcp server. however, if you do an ipconfig /release, and then turn off your modem for the night, when you turn it back on in the morning you are almost gaurenteed to have a new IP address (provided that your ISP is not giving out static IP's when you first sign up for their service)Quote:

my isp will throw your ip back into reserve and usu issue you another one if your cable modem is disconnected for 30 minutes.
i know my isp changes my ip almost every 3 days... which is annoying for my server ;) so i got one of those dyns dns names and linked it into my router... but neway, i think it depends mostly on whether or not you are in an urban or rural area
call your cable provider and ask them to reset it 4 u. they have the means to reset it at there office
Raion - What I mean by a dynamic ip is that it has the possibility of being changed everytime your reboot. It may not always change your IP but they can if they want to.Quote:
