Spying on spyware

well it was a joke but:

"The ANTI B strain was discovered in September, 1990."

"The CDEF virus was first discovered in Ithaca, New York, in August, 1990"

"The CODE 1 virus was discovered at several colleges and universities on the east coast of the United States in November, 1993."

"The CODE 252 virus was discovered in California in April, 1992"

All recent viruses as you can see. Once Hypercard was discontinued that removed a lot of the vulnerability, of course OS X is now vulnerable to Unix virii.

heh to be honest with you that was just the first link that appeared when I typed MAC virus into google ;)

I just wanted to show that people do indeed code virii (or whatever plural you wish to use) for a range of platforms....heh come on even cellular devices (phones, pda's etc) are being hit

Just cause your not on the most targeted list doesn't make you immune...infact thinking that your immune will make you more vunerable

Well I know where you're going with that but I'd like to bring my setup... I don't have an AV, I don't scan for adware, I don't have a software firewall, I download warez quite frequently, I run an Apache webserver with PHP and MySQL on a Win XP, Home Edition. To date, with this setup (after installing Ad-aware and scanning with Trendmicro's Online scan within the past two days), I have 0 viruses and 6 tracking cookies. So that leads to my point.. just because someone doesn't run an AV or crack down on adware , doesn't mean they're in danger... its depends whether or not the person knows how to keep a system up to shape.

Post what he uses for all that stuff.. like what browser, what messaging program, and etc. I'm sure there are settings he can flop around with and make his computer a lot safer. As for KaZaA, what does he download that is infected? I used to download software and music constantly and never got a virus from my downloads (friends sharing their crap with me at a LAN did screw me over once), maybe you should explain to what to watch out for and etc.

I could really care less about the "correct" way to say it plural. If you say virii, people know you mean more than one virus. If you say viruses, people know you mean more than one virus. Pretty simple in my opinion...

Relyt, you oughta direct your kid to this site and tell him if he can learn the basics of securing a system and basics of networking you will give him $20. (Or whatever you have to give him to get him to actually do it) Believe me, young people can be interested in this site too, I know firsthand ;)
