Lol, you guys sound just like US (Americans) when we defend our positions in the world stage. ;)
I lived in 3 different countries who all had major issues being accepted into the EU, Portugal was one - so I see both sides of the issue. Even the farmers and workers in each country demonstrating AGAINST entry. It does seem funny that Mr. Chirac critizes so heavily on one side and takes other stances else where. But hey that is the world. :)
The EU is becoming much like the United States, in perhaps a few decades similar policy will surface as it's influence in a United Body expands? Turkey is an ally to the United States, a member of NATO and just an all around decent country for the most part. I think the United States, as an ally, and member of the UN has the right to say "Hey, let them in" we all know you EU guys won't listen anyway but it's a friend doing his or her part in the scheme. What's he supposed to say, **** off Turkey? :)
Entry into the Union SHOULD BE heavily guarded, as fair as possible, and perhaps "exclusive" to the benefit of the members who forged the alliance. Having said that Turkey has been a very active partner in the defense of Europe over the years - decades in Fact. They will get theirs in time, I imagine in must be frustrating to the populace on both sides.
