I say get a nice guesstimate about how long specific jobs would take, and make yourself a nice little list like that. Like OS install: $50; format:$20; OS+format=$60 [but you don't need to tell that to your customers, just make it seem as a discount or something :)].
Then for stuff that you don't have on your list say you'll make a free estimate [phone only, unless you feel like driving around for nothing]. People can take it or leave it, but at least you can negociate some stuff. You don't want people scared off by prices, otherwise they won't even call. I have no clue how much an advertising campaign would cost you. I'm not sure if it's legal to go to people's houses and just leave a print-out of what you offer in their mailbox, or if you have to do it with the post office only. At least you could cover some areas like this, while things get started out and until you could afford a website or something.

In the US it's illegal to leave things in the mailbox. It's considered tampering with the mail and is a federal crime. Although chances are most wouldn't bother to enforce it ....
However, sticking fliers in doors, under the front mat, in car's wipers..... these and more are all legal. Just leave the mailbox out of it. Best of luck!

I usually charge around $25-35 an hour for family friends and about $50 (discounted from $65) an hour for a business. But that is in SD where consultants usually charge around $75-110 an hour.

One thing I take into consideration is where the business is located. Say I have to drive 1 hr to get to the location I will charge 50 - 100 for travel and then I will charge my fee of 50 -75 an hour. However if I know that the company is within 20 min I will tell them I am giving them a deal on the travel and I will cut the travel out. They love feeling like they get a deal so they will call me for everything even DL Norton Updates.
