You could also get a hosting plan with 1GB of space, unlimited email-accounts, and domain name for under $100 / year. Much easier ;)

(in general, running servers makes your computer easier to attack)
How so? If you are running a dedicated server, then you would have all uneded services turned off or not loaded on the machine at all. You will have the latest updates and all patches installed and configured? How is that easier to attack?

devpon...not quite correct. You should have the latest updates and all patches installed and configured, but you might not. And in general something like a mail server by its nature is designed to communicate with the internet and allow people to connect to it. In my opinion, no matter if you do have all the latest updates, etc. if you are running a program that actually "tries" to get people to connect to it ("tries" used loosely), you are creating a security risk, however small you might think that risk is.
I was mainly attempting to point out that if you run a server you are going to have to keep it updated because if you don't, it's lying there just asking someone to attack it. You may be right in thinking that it doesn't create a security risk to run a server, but I'm not convinced yet.
ac
gothic_type, I see the point you are making and I do agree with you. It was just the way you threw that out there. There might be people here that might take that at face value, I just wanted to make it alittle clearer. As far as the patching, you are correct, you might not want to add a patch, that is why I put a ? at the end of the sentence. That is my bad, trying to put as much info in as little space as possible.
