mark, you are going -way- too hard on nokia. I fully support him, and the parent poster. Allow me to explain:
1. Viruses all work under a common theory: exploitation
2. Exploitation comes from a number of attributes: OS, Filesystem, Management rights, User error, etc
3. Eliminate the current avalaible methods and the ability for the viri to spread becomes hindered.
For example, compare the amount of viri from Windows to Mac, and then from Mac to Linux, and then from Linux to BSD. The numbers are staggeringly differnet, and not just because of one OS being used more than the other. There are certain founding principles in an OS which prevent a virus to a degree:
1. Titanic mode: using multiple partitions with secure settings to prevent systemwide infection
2. Restrictive user permissions: If the user doesn't have systme access to the items the viri needs in the first place, the viri can't attach itself to the binary file.
3. Unfamiliar enviroment: The viri simply doesn't know how to react in a different enviroment, such as a win viri in an osx.
4. OS level security/TCP security protocols that simply work in a completely seperate way. IPv6 is identical to this. It's new set of protocols and rules function in a way that will benifit the internet due to it's more protective nature by it's own coding. Sure, that could be exploited to, but adding an entire level of security at the core of something nullfies the ability for viri to attack.
Now, I hope you read that far. I only have one more thing to say... A long time ago we thought traveling to the moon was impossible due to the dangers of spaceflight, the cost involved, the human skill needed, and simply 'not knowing how'. Just like the moon, just like TV, just like learning the world is round, and just like discovering blackholes.... his idea may have merit in a way that we can't grasp now.
Genius' don't work off of stuff we already understand, and that is why they are geniuses. Because they can see something in a way that we can't grasp yet. Give his idea a chance, before saying we can't travel to the moon. Please.
