WinMX: Possible Hazard's?

i've gotten a couple emails about winMx. it tries to make several encrypted connections to unknown hosts.so i dunno how good it is for security or privacy. i dunno what they do with the connections but take it for what its worth. i have the emails on hand if you want them. plus i remember something in the past about there was sort of a back door where you could view,modify, and place files in a users share directory or any other directory on the hard drive, and it wasnt really an accidental bug either, more put there for WinMX or whoever knew aout it. so that makes me wonder if you can trust them anymore after something like that?

I use kazaa lite k++. Kazaa without the adware//spyware.

muert0- Where can I get that and are you sure it's a safer version of KaZaa?

P.M. me your email and it's virus//spyware free as far as I know and I've been using it for a year or two. I got it off the techtv site but since they merged with G4 I can't find anything I look for there.

I believe they discontinued KaZaA Lite. If I remember correctly, they were shut down for not having authorization to develop KaZaA or something.

deftones12, I think you might be referring to earthstation5 instead of WinMX.
That program did have a backdoor and it was run out of some refugee camp.. :eek:

Yes On December 7, 2003, the Kazaa Lite K++ project has been shut down by Sharman Networks... But the thing is where did all the download sites go :(......I googled for it and none of the websites have Kazza Lite K++ .........I downloaded it say something 8 months ago ..........seems pretty safe to me till now .........Does that the KLK++ Installer i have is Valuable now :).

Well, first let me preface this by saying, pretty GUIs are for lazy people. Take a little bit of time to explore the program, and you'll see what can be done with it. Helplessly's right, it was earthshare, not winMX with the backdoor. I've been using WinMX for over 3 years now. It's pretty stable and it's definitely spyware free. I've tried eDonkey, too buggy; kazaa, spyware galore (lite isnt supported officially unless you find it on some other p2p or illegal site); dc is too buggy for me; bearshare, network too slow. I find the best thing about WinMX is the WinMX Peer Network. The only security flaw is that users ports (6699/6257) are open by default and someone using the netstat command can see your ip address. Simple solution—change your ports, use a firewall or better yet a proxy. If you have a firewall that works, and by working I mean alerting you everytime the internet is accessed between your computer, then I recommend getting one. I use sygate's free personal firewall for home users. www.sygate.com I also agree with Tzu about the DC clients server's minimum of 40 billion gigs. You can't find anything on the servers with a 5g min. The only downfall, I think, of WinMX is availability, but learn how to user the open naps protocal which connects to other progs as audiognome and other international progs and you'll be set. PS, don't make uneducated assumptions that everyone uses P2P clients just for music. I know it sounds cute, "buy the album," but if it were the only reason, there would be a legitmate reason to shut all P2p clients down. I do agree however, support the artist, but f*** the corporate recording companies. They can afford it. :)
