Good Morning,
In addition to an AV, if you haven’t already, set up a multi-layered defense beginning with a good firewall. Kerio or Sygate seem to be the most preferred lately. Then a good AV and I can tell you that I like AVG as well. Toss in some Spybot stuff like SpyBot S & D and Ad-aware. Swatit is also a good Trojan/worm hunter. And also occasionally visit some online sites like Trend Micro’s Housecall.
Now those are all mostly reactive in nature and they work quite well, but hey, SpywareBlaster is suppose to prevent spyware etc., from installing in the first place. So fill up your tool bag, these are all free.

I tend to agree for the most part that AVG is an excellent AV product on the boxes I have installed it on. They remained mostly clean with AVG except on a few occasions, AVG did miss some trojans.
A perfect example just happened recently. I had updated and ran AVG (free edition) on one particular box and it had missed a trojan known as Bloodhound.Exploit.6. I then ran Norton which found/deleted the infected file(s). Does this mean that AVG sucks? hell no. I still like the product and there's also that whole free thing that companies like Symantec don't seem to comprehend very well. (outside of online scanning)
Speaking of which, my virus subscription for Norton just ran out. Guess I won't have any up-to-date virus protection until I fork over the loot. (and don't think I can't hear you AVG users quietly laughing at me) :D
splinterbc,
In addition to AVG, you can also use the free online scans offered by both TrendMicro and Symantec. Although not pro-active in nature, you can still use these scans for your own benefit.
