I hope Florida doesn't get hit again. Although my friend who lives in florida has power and phone already..she got it like a day after?? She lives in Orlando FL.
According to the picture at that link, at least some part of Fl is about to get slammed. I'd say there's a 30% chance of it totally missing Florida... Also maybe 30% chance that it annihilates several of the same areas that just got hit by Frances. There's a good chance of it affecting me here in Atlanta too, but you won't catch me boo-hooing about it b/c even if it's still a category 1 by the time it hits - we don't get anything *near* what Florida has to deal with. They have worse hurricanes (obviously), the worst lightning in the US, (and some of the worst in the world), and they have their fair share of tornadoes too. So.....anybody wanna move to Florida?
At least with huricanes you get some warning... Most you get on a tornado is about 5 minutes, max. Usually we get about 2 before it is on top of us... Tornados are scary as hell, cuz you never actually know if it's going to hit you or not... I have seen quite a few... One hit about 5 miles north of my house, one hit 3 miles east (came right up from the south)... Freaky stuff I tell you... Specially when you have no power, and you live far enough out that you can't hear any sirens or anything.. In the middle of the night, you just gotta hope it doesn't hit you...
We have been lucky here in Missouri this year... We have only had about 10 tornado producing storms due to the awkward weather we have had this summer...

Ivan was upgraded earlier today to a category *5* storm. I don't remember any others that powerful....except Andrew was a cat 5 right before it hit. Ivan is *already* a cat 5 and it hasn't even gotten past Cuba yet. Holy sh*t! They're saying on the news that Floridians will be feeling winds in the tropical storm range tomorrow....and the damn thing isn't even supposed to hit for a few more days! That's freaking insane...
Yeah, I live in Georgia's tornado alley and I've visually seen 2 in the past couple of years and we've had plenty of them on the ground that I never actually saw.....actually seeing them is rare. We'll probably get a few next week b/c Ivan will still be classified as a hurricane when it comes through Atlanta and it should spawn some tornados....should be interesting. Maybe schools will be closed. ;) South (coastal) Ga had appx 15 tornado touchdowns from Frances. I saw some footage of a waterspout that came to shore and annihilated some buildings....incredible stuff. :eek:Quote:

(when I was six I found out how a mobile home reacts when a tornado comes close. We were in it and bam, pieces everywhere. Needless to say it was quite a Charmin moment.)

welp, it always sucks to go without basic necessities. A few years ago Oklahoma had the big 'ice' storm, which cut off power in my town for 29 days. No phone, no electricity of any kind. All we had were cars and cell phones. Missed school for two weeks because of it. Talk about disaster. Didn't kill as many as the hurricanes though, only old people too feeble to get out of their frigid homes or start a fire. But of course alot of our heating still worked, because we had a generator.Quote:

Damn I hated that ice storm... I had to live in a house in town for a week... It sucked... Then of course when we get power back out at our house and it starts to warm up outside I had about 15 hours of brush clean up...
yeah no ****, thats all we did for about a month was clean up tree limbs and power line poles, etc.. especially the ones that fell onto peoples houses.
Heh, Kind of off topic, but this really fat lady and her sister that live in my town, a tree fell on their house, and they went out to look at it, and the other one went in to call the fire dept, and the other half of the tree (it got struck by lightning) fell on her. Like RIGHT on her... It was some freaky stuff... Gotta love storms...
eh back on topic I think we had about 15 trees down here at my house... Two over our driveway in fact... Power was out all over town... a few of the transformers that sit on the ground for the underground power lines got hit by trees... That was some crazy stuff...
Playing soccer on an iced over porch is one of the funnest winter experiences I have ever had... It was awesome... Then we got on sleds and slid all the way down my friends driveway... It is really steep and covered in a layer of ice 1/2" thick you FLY. We would go all the way across the road, hop the curb, and keep going down the next hill, then try to stop before we hit a small lake... It was awesome...
Sorry for "reviving the dead" so to speak...but I'm back :)
We were without power for 10 days, and just got our phone service back today. We are also getting the "leftovers" of Ivan today...and they're saying it could go back out into the Gulf of Mexico and re-form!!! :eek:
