To back-up data you might want to look into downloading Knoppix or another Linux security distribution [LiveCD]. That'll give you NTFS read acces and you'll be able to save some of the stuff you really need before you go into reinstalling the OS.

SLAX also reads NTFS so you could look into it to do the same thing. It's 187mb and can be found here.
