gore: You know the sticker Explicit Content? It doesn't just mean swearing. It means anything that basically is... well, explicit. Catch me? They do record two versions. One is not editted at all and the other takes out anything explicit about the song.

So... you're saying that artists nowadays have to record two versions of their albums?
"Ok Mr. Hetfield... we got that song on tape... now let's do the Wal-mart version... don't sing any nasty words, please... and oh, cut the last verse"?
Or is it Wal-mart personnel (excuse me: associates) that record the Wal-mart versions?
"Ok, Bob, today's your turn to play the guitar... it's the new Metallica... better practice a little on that solo... and make sure the version you record is shorter than the original one"?
Or maybe it's MixMaster Wally who gets the CD's from the record companies, then fires up Cubase and edits the CD? Or maybe he's lucky and the record companies give him the masters?
I'm not sure if I get it, Gore...
No... they have to create two versions anyway. The radio edit and the normal cd. Walmart just chooses not to stock CDs that have the Parental Advisory sticker on them. Many artists will do this so any group can listen to them. More sales for them... Some bands don't give a **** and only release one copy. Like the MTV crowd... they hear all this rap crap on MTV and want the CDs, but their parents don't want them listening to all the cuss words, smack my bitch up, shoot your mom, etc. So, they have a version that "responsible parents" might let their kids listen to.

My son is 9. He listens to popular radio, and he gets an allowance. Personally, I'm glad I can take him to Wal-Mart and let him purchase the music he wants to listen to. I just think it would be nice if they carried both versions of albums.
Surely now Gore, you're not suggesting I censor his musical taste?

But what Gore basically was saying is that a given album bought at Wal-mart differs from that same album bought at Best Buy, and I don't buy that...
I have proof in my closet. I have two of the exact same CD. One from K-Mart and one from Best buy. The one from K-Mart has entire sections of it missing, and the one from Best Buy has all the CD on it and the swearing.
One example that's easy too see:
Rob Zombie, the first CD he released solo, the K-Mart version has no Pentagram on it, and the X on his head is missing, and the book is different, the version of that CD I bought at Best Buy has all of that and a different booklet with more in it.
The firs Limp Bizkit CD is the same, the part at the end of the first song where Fred is screaming into the Mic, they don't have that in the Kmart version, the volume just drops at that point and you hear nothing, then it start the next song. The real version has him screaming into the Mic and you hear everything.
White Zombie - Super Sexy Swingin' Sounds,
Wal-Mart version has the edited **** plus the girl on the cover is in clothing even though you can't see anything anwyay. My copy is from Best Buy, she doesn't have the clothing they painted on the Wal Mart version, and the booklet is actually full.
The CDs are different Neggy, you buy one from Wal Mart or K mart, and it's edited and the CD booklet may be changed, and parts of the CD are gone. Buy the same CD from Best Buy or FYE and you have the whole CD, no edits.

I guess it doesn't make sense to me because it just doesn't make sense...
- Why would you create a radio edit of a complete CD - unless you make an album that only consists of number 1 hits, of course...
- If there really are two versions, they shouldn't call the second one "radio edit" - they should call it "cleaned up" version or something.
- You mentioned the "smack my bitch up" one, phish... I just don't understand how you'd make a "responsible parent" version of that. Smack my bleep up? Bleep my bleep up? Bleep Ble Bleep Ble? Or do they just change all the lyrics? "Smack my bitch up" becomes "Teddy bear loves me"?
I guess it's true, then.... How very very sad...

No, I'm going for the opposite. I don't think anyone should have the right to censor ANYONE'S taste in music. Heh, you may know this one:
Remember the band Jackyl? The song She loves my ****, that song isn't on most versions of the CD. You have too buy it from FYE or Best Buy. If you get it anywherre else you get a sticker on the CD saying "Cleaned up for your enjoyment". Which is crap. That song rocks. I'm not sure if "Down on me" is on there either.
Now your son being 9, it's up too you if you think he's matured to the level he can listen to some music that is violent without it getting too him. I don't like people saying you can't listen to some things on a CD, but for kids they are young and don't understand sometimes, so if a kid doesn't understand it's only a CD and not real, then well, wait untill he does.
I guess what I'm saying is:
If he is too young to understand what they are saying, or doesn't understand, then well, maybe wait a while, but if he's mature for his age which I believe you pointed out in another thread that he was, then he should be able to listen to whatever he wants too no matter what it is.
Heh, I won't post what I think of Tipper gore or her ******* idiot Husband. Even with the hide post option, it wouldn't be enough with what I think of those two. Heh, funny how I have to Censor myself because of what I think about those two people who want Censorship. Lol.
That would be like saying Sweet Home Alabama is a bad song because he could mean something else in the lyrics. Which is again, stupid.

No, they take the song right off the album as I stated with Jackyl.

If I may interject....
The bands record one version of the album.
The label then goes through it, and digitally edits the songs for radio/clean versions/etc.
The label then ships the appropriate versions to the appropriate stores, and sometimes both versions end up in the same store.
I used to work for an FYE subsidiary, and we would often get in two different copies of albums; one that was labeled "EDITED" across the top, and another that had the "Parental Advisory" label on the front. Two different albums, two different UPC codes. It all happens at the factory.
:p

I've never bought a CD from Wal-Mart, for the same reason that gore said. Every single CD that they have is either non-parental-advisory or edited.
Although I've heard that the version of Tool's Undertow that they stock isn't actually edited :) They just removed all the artwork in the booklet thingy. But since Tool is so cool, they put this inside so that you could order the real artwork :D
Best Buy is the best place to get CDs. They carry more of the stuff that I like. Still, a lot of the time I have to order from Amazon for the underground metal that I crave ;)
