Of course you don't need to know how to program to know how to break into a computer.
This is also the reason you need very little intelligence what's so ever to 'hack' a computer.
Mr. Dumb nmap's some webserver, Mr. Dumb runs Nessus against it, Mr. Dumb looks for the usual things like SQL Injection, Cross site scripting, file includes,..... Mr. Dumb owns the server.
You can't deny this is piss easy.
I saw some documentary on NBC a few days/weeks ago about 'hackers', they interviewed some blackhats who got a trill of breaking into servers, over and over.
I see little intellectual challenge in this once you are capable of doing this....
Programming is the required basics, Period.

I do agree with the fact that programming is a very basic requirement for a good hacker. We all know that it doesn't take much programing skill to own a system. But to become a really skilled hacker you need to know more than how to get root. He should have the capability of finding exploits and patching them himself. What's the fun if you can't tell your box what to do yourself ????

Agreed any script kid can compromise a server, but it take a real hacker to exploit something, especially if it is an unknow vulnerability.
