That said, I don't see why people aren't using the feature that was given to them to deal with this issue: APs? As to the issue brought up, as I read through these posts people seem to think that you must be a pure security expert to add value here. I think that's a wrong assumption. We don't start out as "experts". There is value that can be added. Additionally, there are those that maintain their curiosity so they end up asking lots of questions (hence a high post count). Focusing on post count and APs is the wrong thing to focus on when judging the value of a person and what they bring here.

Why not look at their posts and judge them based on that? The adage of "Don't judge a book by it's cover" is very apropos. That said, I don't think this is a suggestion and am moving it to Questions about AO (for now)

I agree with MsMitten's on this very strongly. I can't say how many times I have picked up info in the replies to a queation asked by someone new (Including myself). A lot of times, if the orginal question is based on a sincere interest in learning, and the person has put a lot of thought into how they post, I will award points for that.

Sometimes the person who asks the basic (I dont want to say stupid) question adds a lot to a discussion. While I don't think those people should skyrocket to "Senior Members" I do think they should "reward" for a good post. I guess sometimes it isn't WHAT they ask or reply, but HOW and why. Sometimes thought provoking is as important and technically savy.

For those who have made the "senior member" status and above, try and keep in mind that your posts reflect on the overall AO image. Some poster's do need to be flamed back to reality, no doubt about it, but I have seen far to many posts based on open contempt for those less mortals that aren't as well inform.

Whether a system like the AP's is a useful/useless thing can really be discussed to no end.
I think, #posts, AP's and the profile-text do provide me with some information about
the quality (like level of curiosity, knowledge, skills, intelligence, ...) of a guy's posts.
But much more important, at least to me:
It happens to me regularily, that I want to green a post - but can't,
since I greened that member recently. THEN, I look at the writer of the post.
This gives me much more important information about the quality of that guy's
posts. At least in the limits of my "taste".

Uh. No. Takes too long. One post, ok fine. Having to hunt and peck to specifically delete 750+ posts, not reasonable IMO.

What most people don't understand, and I'm at a loss why, is that the AP system is used to give you an *idea* about how the person is seen here. It's not intended to be the sole way to determine if a member pumps out (excuse the expression) horse ****. The only way to truly know the quality of the member's posts is to read a bunch of them and see how well they are written and how much useful/accurate information is contained within. Even this is a subjective method to a degree. Bottom line, as someone said, # of posts and snot dots are not extremely valuable in gauging member "leetness".

If a member has red dots are they still snot dots? Or are they just getting pummeled so much they get blood in their snot? Or is it something completely different?

No offence TH, but the reason why is that the reason you just gave is total BS. Antipoints may have had something to do with the quality of posts in the past, but now it's more about who your friends are. Combine that with certain members who hand them out like candy (Gore) and the system stops working the way it was intended. Seriously, it seems like it's high school here sometimes and APs are your relative popularity in school. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so sad that there are so many supposed professionals acting this way.

To a degree? There are members here who are happy to continually give bad advice and such, yet they get loads of greenies for it -NOT- because they are knowledgeable, but for the very reason that antipoints encourage a personality contest between people. It's silly and childish, yes, but it happens. References available on request. ;)
