One of the reasons Cortez had gone to Mexico was to exchange the religion of the natives for the Christian religion. When Cortez ordered the natives to stop worshiping their gods and worship the Christian god instead. The natives refused so Cortez and his men destroyed the native statues.

On November 8, 1519 Cortez led his army into Tenochitilan. Montezuma and the Aztecs treated Cortez and his army with respect. Valázques sent solders to arrest Cortez. Cortez conquered Velázques and returned to Tenochitlan. Cortez captured Montezuma and used him to control the Aztecs. Montezuma was killed, and in May 1521 Cortez attacked Tenochtitlan and this time succeeded. The Aztec Empire fell on August 13 and Cortez had all the gold he wanted by of course, killing thousands of innocent people and destroying the Aztec Empire.
