It's not the education system, that I assure you. I go to the 7th poorest school in the state, and I have a very good education so far, and most of it comes from school. Computers are about the only thing I have learned a ton about outside of school. Most of my teacher's are excellent. Problem is, they lack students who have any interest in learning. Society is what is broken. Teachers try to fix this problem and succeed sometimes, but not often. I really think the fault lies more on the American public and society than on the Public Education System.Quote:

This is why I'm homeschooled! I know where Iraq is, and Canada, England, etc. Truly, the public education system of America is broken.
umm...
Ever think that this is merely a propaganda article. Or even better a statistical tamering- they just asked the 'retards' up at New York and not the 'whole' population (a wide range of New Yorkers)? But I seen the problem- at least at my former middle/ high school. They teach geography around eighth or ninth grade and thats it. I myself have remembered everything but I doubt everyone did especially since a lot of poeple just 'go with the flow'. This is quite shameful especially if this is not tampered with but I wonder 'bout other people outside of the United States if they could do any better :) ?
Iraq is just outside of Baghdad IIRC.
cybr1d, if you ever have kids beware of public schools. Where kids are pushed through for statistics and grants etc....Quote:

Were all those who were asked US citizens? How broad was this research...i.e. were people from all states asked(or at least close to), or were just a handful of people asked from the middle of nowhere?
And this is why my children will never step foot in Liberal taught public school systems. *pssssssigh* Inner-city liberal slum schools, and the majority of degenerates that come out of them. I'm not surprised, hell, I see this all the time on the Howard Stern show. Scores girls don't know how many rings are in the Olympics trademark symbol. Dick Cheney? But you know what is the really sad thing? These people are making 10 to 50 times more than the average in most countries.
I was having dinner with my brother and his wife the other day, and she was telling us how her uncle just married a doctor from Ukraine. She has her own fitness facility as well, plus some other side operations, and she can barely get by on her income. Chicken is like a friggin delicacy over there, chicken!
Degenerates, I tell you fuking degenerates.
Kurt to be honest I doubt if they needed to tamper with the results. This is not the first time a survey like this has been carried out with similar or worst results. Americains are notorious for their lack of a goegraphical education. It is similar to the interviews given by RTE(the irish national television carrier) during the St Patrick day parades around the states a couple of years back.Quote:

I think that sums up where the problem comes from. One year of having geography as a subject doesnt give the teacher time to cover much.Quote:

Iraq is in the closet, I hang my coat there every day on the upper peg, unless going to lunch - then I hang it on the lower peg.
In all fairness, most Euros and Easterners I have met really don't know the geography of South America. I mean North America is easy! Not much in remebering Candada on Top, very huge then the United States in the middle, huge too - then Mexico. :)
Shoot, not even a whole year. Just a "chunk" of it in the year. You have to CHOOSE to take it in most high schools, though most do offer it for anyone who wants it, but it's not required.Quote:

Well it was different when I was in school. World Geography and science and government principles were burned into our brains. What the hell do you kids do all day? Sex education :D I know you kids don't learn to drive very well. So what the hell do you do all day set in the back with headphones on?
Remember kids today aren't allowed to be challenged because it has to be fair so everyone has to work at the paces of some ****tards that make up .00001 percent of the school. Then you can't elevate someone who can understand world geography above someone else because you might hurt his or her little feelings. I am just guessing though, through my limited exposure to modern American elementary schools. The best schools I have ever seen were in the United Kingdom. Each society has their best strengths and weakness in education but the overall best was there.
