My thinking on joke programs was:

I seem to have tamed this one..................I switched off the mouse accelleration feature, and it hasn't done it since.

I agree with RoadClosed. Try turning off the enhanced pointer precision.

The fact that it moves when you are holding the mouse would seem to rule out the sloping surface/vibration possibility.

As you have a "generic" mouse, you will be using the Win2000 default drivers. You would have seen an option in the "drivers" section of Windows Update if there was anything new.

I had that problem when using a cheap PS/2 optical mouse on my laptop. I went back to my USB optical mouse and have never had that problem again.

I just tried the same mouse on this PC and it was doing the same thing. With the PS/2 non optical mouse that came with this it is fine. With the better quality USB optical I use on my laptop there is not a problem.

Well...here's the breakdown...control-mouse :

I apologise for reviving this thread but it remains my one yet unsolved puzzle...I've posted this question on other forums I belong to as well and it as of yet remains a mystery.

To add to my above comments...I regularly do full AdWare SE and AVG scans which come up empty...I also have SpywareBlaster and ZoneAlarm...do regular disk clean-ups...clear the cache on my browser...and disk defragment when required.

I have 80GB with 93% free space and ample memory for my system ( I think ) at 384MB.,

Suggestions and/or solutions appreciated, as this problem still exists.

Change the mouse.
Beg, borrow or steal one.
just to try it, and give us a different baseline to work from.

Does the fault happen every time ?
does it happen ALL the time ?
Do you have problems hitting the radio buttons ?
Have you been drinking :D [I know I have ]
If not: Maybe you should ?
You wont notice the mouse wobbling when YOU are :D

Is it obviously moving to the quick glance ?


I'm more in favour of the dirty mouse party.
Although, if you get a totally different mouse that needs its own software to be loaded, and that cures it. I am open to changing my stance on that one :D

Yep...this is a new mouse, had the same problem with the old one so I bought this one...and still same.
It happens quite frequently ( maybe 10-15 times when I'm on the net...I've never noticed it doing that while offline ).
But it doesn't seem to interfere with my use...because I can move the cursor to where I want it to go.
It's just very annoying.
I don't drink...and I probably should.! ( place big smile here-on quick reply)
Maybe it's just old age and I'm starting to see things ! ( place very big smile here)

Is it a new TYPE, or is it a copy of what you had ?
Ideally, change from a roller ball type to optic, or vice versa.

Well...it's different anyways,,,the mouse I had was a regular Microsoft mouse with the two buttons and the centre scroll thingy I never used...this one just has the two buttons...no software, just plug n' play...

I'll buy an optic and see what happens...never tried that because that was always the first question people asked me " is it an optic ", because it seems to be a common problem with optic mouses...maybe the reverse is true in my case...maybe optic's will solve the problem...it's a nuisance more than anything, especially when it moves at the same time I'm trying to click on something.

Is it possible that there's something on my computer that hasn't been picked up by AdWare and AVG...I attend several forums, and most ( 99.99999% )of the people that are also members ( or guests ) are much smarter than myself when it comes to computers...and even though I've made lots of friends...I'm sure I've made a few ( at least one or two ) :D not-friends...I'd like to eliminate that possibility if you know how I'd go about checking that. Or could it be a program running in the background that I'm un-aware of that's responsible...and how would I go about checking that?

I'll buy the optic next payday and see what happens...but if you have any info on the latter I could use that too! :) :D

I use the optic type. MS Intellipoint, five button version, [and I don't know how I managed without those extra clickers for so long ....... ] and I've had no problems with it, there is a bucketful of options to choose from.
As I said; if you could just borrow? one to test, it would save you buying for no reason.

I believe that generic PnP mice are not updated on Windows update ? but the intellipoint IS.

As for unknowns / ghosts in the machine, you could always try and run through that new tut on adware / spyware removal ............:D
At least try out the HiJackThis, and see if there is anything that looks odd.

I would have just bumped the thread, but I felt it to be better to add a reason.

We can assume that you have checked for conflicts ?
and that you have tried a different mouse, with no joy ?

This leaves only that which is a constant in all scenarios ...... [I assume that as all operations in the O/S at some time or other are held in RAM ? to remove, check / clean and replace the said item]

As previously posted, I suggested you change the mouse, both new style AND type, preferably one that comes with its own drivers.

So how about some more details please Eg ? :)
