As for gaming
I personally do not play games on the computer...anymore...as I already spend most of my time working on computers...I really feel the need to enjoy other aspects of life....such as kids..significant other.....wine...etc
IMHO...gaming drives the hardware business...cause no end business user needs a P4, 120gig HD and a 256MB video card to run databases, excel, word processing and email...unless you are compiling, programing or using autocad etc
Although gaming did give me my start in computers...as I had to learn DOS to game back in the "old" days with my 286 :)....where I had to remove the old game to make room for my new game to install on my 20MB HD...
Gaming also made me get familiar with hardware as I had to update my 2MB of RAM to 4MB (a $120.00)and upgrade my video card to run the new game....wow did that ever make a difference!!!
Now gaming is teaching my kids about computers....they know how to ctrl\alt\del to end rogue processes, how to scan for spyware...and finally...hit that old reset button..if all else fails
Teaching them now how to reset the dsl modem, router when their online gaming hangs up.."always start with the device closest to the wall"
As other people have mentioned in this thread...I believe it is the addictive personality that gets us started in computers....and keeps us there.
It is definately a "special breed" as most people just dont have patience, logic or common sense
and like TS ...I have redirected my addiction toward ...databases now :(
definately another vertical learning curve!!
But I love the challenge!!

Heh Im one of the lucky ones i guess. My wife is as much of an avid gamer as i am. She is perfectly understanding when I go on one of my rare binges. Coming to bed at 1:00am when the alarm clock goes off at 4:30am. Just as long as I dont make too much noise when i get to bed. She even plays counter strike from time to time. She tends to stick to rpgs because her laptop just cant handle alot of CS and we dont have the money to build her a gaming desktop ATM but we will. HEll she's even cool enought o stop what shes doing when the CS clan has a match to come cheer us on and so she doens screw up my ping :)
My apologies to Zombiegirl for keeping you up so late playing CS. ;)
I have played Ragnarok and FFXI online and have enjoyed both. I did have a couple moments of realization when friends were going to come over and I did not want to leave a party (party in the game), but I have been pretty good after that. People seriously need to think about how much they binge away on these games.

I have to admit that I "dabble" in CS from time to time (4am has been known to happen during some games). But the game that got me the most addicted out of all I've played was FF7. OMG how I love it, and I'm a FPS person normally.
At the moment I've got really into climbing - I guess I could be described as obsessive (virtually every day for the past few months :P) Hopefully I'll get to go tomorrow.

I play video games quite a bit, definitly more than most people but still not as much as my friends. CS:Source is fun as hell although I suck at it pretty badly. I used to be really good at CoD but then I stopped playing for like 4 or 5 months and I suck at that now too (In my opinion at any rate, most people still say I'm really good, but whatever). I play xbox all the time, KOTOR II rocks, as does Halo 2 on live. I wish they would've just made Halo 1 live enabled though... The other game I've been really into lately is Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth. It's a really fun RTS based on the Generals Engine but also includes some elements from Warcraft such as heros and a really cool new thing were you're troops actually rank up and have more health at each subsequent level and stay with you throughout the whole campaign, unless of course they die.
Anyone tried out Gary's Mod for Half Life 2? It's a really cool thing that allows you to spawn any object in the game and screw with the physics. Making melons knock a car over is just plain fun.
Anyone here use Xfire? I'd like to hook up and play with some of you guys some time.

All of you will pay that choose not to be involved in on-line games...When my guild of hundreds of lvl. 70+ come for you with our runite 2-handed swords, and are mages cast magic missle on you, and our allies the Phenox Gang will asist us to rule you all with there lvl. 80 ranging!!! HA HA HA HA HA...lag...Ya, i play MMORP games, but never has it become an addiction. I will admit i've played for over 24 hours straight, but it just got boring after so long. So now, i walk around my town weilding my enchanted wizard rod with the fire orb to give me a +10 magic boost. If anyone gets in my way I cast flame bolt on them...
At a point some games should kick you off. "You've played for 10 hours. You can't log on for another 5."
