If you were reasonably happy with 256Mb of RAM, it does not sound as if increasing the 512Mb that you now have would be that much of a benefit. I certainly wouldn't go above 1024MB as I very much doubt if you would use it.
Theres days I build with 1024Mb unless the user is heavily into CAD or image manipulation/photo editing.
Maybe the next thing to look at is the video card?
