Gore, I have read some of your posts (quite a few actually, I might add). That said, these last few posts come across as religious fervor (a la the old "my OS is better than your OS" -- anyone got a measuring stick?! :D). The argument to use Linux in place of Windows has to be more than cool factor. If it was entirely based on cool factor, we'd all be using Mac. I was rather surprised that Novell used that ad to target NT. Seriously. Don't get me wrong, it's humourous but falls flat when comparing a modern OS (2004/5) to a legacy one (1996/7). If they had done the comparison to Win2K (which most companies are just now migrating over to and getting the shock that support will go) then it would have far more ramifications, IMO. I'm also a bit dismayed that Novell is taking this route (cheap shots, albeit humours and somewhat true). I always thought they were above Microsoft in this manner.

The one cost that isn't included in your argument is desktop costs. It's not servers that get hugely infected, it's the employee desktop. Converting and training employees and dealing with that can be far more costly than the day-to-day dealings with spyware, viruses, etc. I know environments where they are entirely windows and don't have any of these issues and never had. It gets back to the administration of the system and network -- how good is it, how diligent and attentive is the admin.

And I wouldn't be surprised if we do see a variant of this as an ad for Superbowl. Apple has used the Superbowl successfully for numerous ads, including their introduction of Macintosh in 1984. (how apropos that was).

The movie was funny. It doesnt matter that it is bashing windows. Of course outdated software shouldnt be supported but that doesnt change the fact that the movie is funny.

Hehe, reminds me of this Microsoft ad (I don't recall if this was ever proven as a real campaign, or just anti-MS propaganda. Either way, it's funny.)

One, MsMittens, I used Mac OS X for my first time recently. Thought you'd like to hear it. I figured it out fairly quickly and was very happy when I found the bash shell.

Two, XTC is the only person on this page who posted something that made an actual reason as to why I made this thread. SDK you honestly think me of all people made this thread to bash windows? RHN is half the reason I don't like Red Hat. That and up2date is a nazi. YAST2 is the best admin tool ever created. Anyone who's ever used it would agree.

KISS... keep it simple stupid... (not you... YUM)

On machines that *have* to stay up2date... its easy enough to create a cron job to run yum.
No user action required... except of course the updates you *have* to reboot... kernel updates.

However, I do agree with you. YAST2 is very nice. But you know me... I don't have the cash to shell out every time they decide to up their version number by .1
Or... can you just use YAST2's update to upgrade from x.0 to x.1?

You need to get a dvd burner and keep me on your distro list.
