Well, I strongly aggree with blackice on this issue, try another modem that your positive works, and also try selling her on broadband. The only thing I don't agree with is tricking the computer. Why use aol's connection and still use WM's shitty software? Why not just forget all about walmarts crap and make an entire switch to aol. Yes, I know how much we all hate aol, but it just seems easier...
Also, maybe some tcp/ip configurations are messed up after all that spyware installations and unintallations, try this tool, it has served me very well in the past:
