I did a quick search and found this post over at some site, the kid posted a log.

I was on AOL IM and, like an idiot, clicked on a link in someone's profile. It was an away message that said something like "Pics from the beach" with a smiley face. Needless to say, that now pops up as my away message. It changed to "pics from valentines" today, so it's safe to say that the spyware i ran didn't get rid of it. Please help. Here's the log:

JD don’t be like that….we NEED details. In most cases it is our job to know. If you want details just ask a question. You’ll get more details than you could ever need. But we have to have them.

I have no doubt what your saying is true, and you might have even been hit by this little rascal but if you don’t give details your post means diddley-squat to all of us. We HAVE to have DETAILS.

Someone says show where there is proof, OP replies saying they just found out about it yesterday.... WELL, where did you find out about it FROM?

I'm guessing this is either that AIM problem from quite a while ago and this dude never updated, orhe has not one clue what he's talking about.

Here, since all I wanted was some solid information so that I could act upon the alert. Again, when I ask for details, I'm not asking you to prove a damn thing. I'm asking you for information so that I can react before one of my numbnutz gets into trouble.

I got a sample of the bugger.

The virus itself causes AOL Instant Messenger to continuously display an away message that says: "Valentines Day Pics...:) http://www.abcbirds.org/photos.pif "

Once the pif file is launched, that computer is then infected with the same virus. This virus prevents taskmgr, regedit, and netstat from launching. It also creates a connection over port 8080 to 63.246.131.130 (a host in Istanbul).

Some people think this is a variant of SDBot. I can't prove either way at this point.

Perhaps it’s not stupidity! One of the things I have learned here in AO is to be ready when you ask questions. Or prepare your inquiries in at least a way that AO community could respond in a timely manner. How can they respond on time?

First things first, your information should be more than half of the idea. ‘Coz if not, your QUESTION could only be answered by QUESTION(s) or HUMOR or CRITICISMS and so on and so forth.

Let me tell you some of the ways (I could say) how I face issues (even the smallest alerts in my BOX – ‘Coz you’ll never know that this STUPIDITY you are talking, for instance this AIM stupidity could perhaps, like thehorse13 told, could infect you with a VIRUS., worst is your BOX could be compromised) before seeking help in the net and forums like AO.

But in a way, we could also consider the idea that many of us were non-techie guys and just want to use the BOX normally as it should be. But again, this was told before, I will tell you again, the Internet (the computer world) is a jungle out there. From time to time you could face VIRUSES, TROJANS, HANGUPS, even NEGATIVE IMPRESSIONS on your inquiries (which you have to be prepared of too).

Going back to the way you should present your inquiries, data (as evidence) is the foundation of theories that will eventually be laws, in this case, FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES. So, in your case, you could do a screen capture for the message that popped up during this dilemma. A log file is very useful in many issues pertaining to one’s BOX; you could use it to further investigate. In case of non-availability of the log file, a screen capture will do. Added with some description and such. In this way you could save time and efforts battling about the reliability of the specific inquiry that you brought about. And, in case of the AO COUNCIL (I COULD IMAGINE IT LIKE THE JEDI COUNCIL IN STARWARS), it could provide alacrity to let them save the UNIVERSE in time. In short, it could lessen the CRAP (like what I am telling now?) AND GET INTO BUSINESS.

But I love it when the AO guys do the criticisms and give some NEGS (well, if it’s worth it or… if it pisses them off somehow), for what? To encourage us! To learn… and to be ready. These CRITICISMS WERE CONSTRUCTIVE (in most cases).

Secondly, just like what MsMittens told sometime, “RESEARCHHHHH!” - Help yourself; sometimes you have to DO SOME CLICKING AND TYPING! Google it…

Hey thanks for all the pointers. I couldn't really write much about it because I did try to google it but there was no information that exsisted so I just wanted to write it and maybe somebody would say, "Hey I got that also." so then maybe we could have gotten more info.
