Hunter S. had a huge gift. He was able to observe as a participant. That was the type of journalism that became his trademark. Those currently attempting to do this are just wannabes. We can only wish for the directness and honesty from our so-called broadcast journalists and newpaper reporters today.
I wasn't able to read Hunter's take on the 1972 presidential candidates until well after the election (I was in Vietnam and information was censored). Evidently, not enough citizens read it during the campaign, either. Nixon was re-elected.
I don't agree with or condone his appetites, and I think that had a lot to do with people not taking him seriously--he alienated the mainstream.
