ouch. okay - you might have got me there. i was assuming they must be in the same vicinity if buddy can sort of connect to it. and there are tools and apps that can help you get closed to the AP based on signal amplitude.

quick story. i work at a university. i don't support student. i support the business units. anyway, i hadn't deplyed a wireless network. this mangler calls me up and says, "the wireless network is down! fix it!"

i am like, "okay, we don't have wireless".

dude goes, "rubbish. i have my own laptop i bought 6 months ago and i have been using the wireless network all along!"

i go up to the asswipes office and look at his dinky laptop. true enough, i am seeing a wireless AP on it. winxp is set out of the box to connect to whatever is sees. his office is right accross from the studen res. one of the students (stupid chick! - the AP SSID was a chicks name) bought an W-AP and just plugged it into her highspeed. buddy been piggy backing for 6 months, chick to stupid to realize. LOL

you think i did anything? hell no. i just told the guy "looks like they fixed it" and left.

I have to throw this into the kettle Jebo:

By your own inaction you have potentially opened your school up to a monster of a lawsuit. Educational institutes are notorious for having incompetent or no legal staffing, so odds are they'll settle for a fat figure before realizing they *might* have fought it successfully with competent representation. But I'm 3 steps ahead of you. Let's back up a bit, shall we?

Prof Asswipe is piggybacking illegally on Student Idiot's wireless hispeed. Her EULA with her ISP probably says her computer and computers within her home who are authorized specifically by her. Ok, let's define "home" in relation to a student - the dorm room. That's it.

ISP Techie BrightBoy is up doing his morning scans one day, picking accounts at random like he always does, and hits upon Student Idiot's account. He notes there's more than one computer using her WAP.

Knowing from her account information that she lives in a dorm room, BrightBoy sees her computer, her roommate's, and Professor Asswipe's. 1+1 not equalling three, he starts to poke around a bit. With investigation, he learns that Professor Asswipe doesn't live in her dorm room, therefore Student Idiot is in violation of her EULA.

Techie BrightBoy takes this information to his boss, who promptly has him discontinue all isp service to Student Idiot. BrightBoy's boss, Doc PCFixer, calls his lawyer about the University's illegal use of his isp. A suit begins being prepared to be filed.

In the meantime, Student Idiot tries logging to her ISP, finds out the hard way it's down, calls techie support, finds out exactly why it's down, calls her laywer plus files formal complaint with the Dean of Students. Another suit begins being prepared to be filed.

Dean of Students calls Professor Asswipe. Asswipe tells him "I had Jabo in here working on it the other day when it was down! I didn't know it was illegal access, and Jabo, who should have known and informed me, failed to do so."

Final outcome:
Jabo gets canned, NumbNutz University pays out an odd half-million in damages to Student Idiot and her ISP (You'd be amazed at how much damages a student can show for something as simple as denial of service - what's the value of the one day of education she missed or the 'f' she got on her research paper due to that missed research?

Long story short, Do your freakin job moron. Enjoy the reds.

The Indirect approach is the best.. people respond better to a third party..

Find an artical or two from a reputable mag.. incorporate it in a pamphlet.. offer your services as a Wireless security Xpert.. If the person cares they will ring.. if they don't... stiff... in the wash you will probably pick up a bit of work and cash money.. the person MAY do something for themselves from the information you provided.. great.. then again they may not.... stiff.... some people will now be aware of wireless security

in all a win-win..

But that's the point of 'our' work ...........
It cannot be quantified, nor can it be properly costed.
Therefore we do what we can when we can.

if the network access of the pc is your responsability.. then who's network is being used is definitly YOUR Concern!!

let me put this into the mix.

#1 - no one is gonna sue anybody.
#2 - no one is gonna get fired.

here's how it works. and it's very simple.

- these are the standard dept. approved equippment we support.
- and these are the apps we support.
- and we guarantee that these machines with these apps on our network are gonna work all the time. (under this statement I include maintenance work such as security, patching e.t.c)

now if you go out and start buying your own comp. equipment and apps on your own and bring them into the office and try to make them work - and if you have problems, tough poop! it's your stuff, you deal with it, not my problem. i have way too many other users that actually listen and stick to the rules listed above that need my help - they come first. just because the equpment or app was brought into the office premises, does not mean it automiticallly becomes part of our job to look after it.

whats more - it's not connecting to my network because I can not ensure and don't have the time to keep checking that it's patched, updated, has AV running correctly e.t.c.

sorry, but you have to be very direct with users and you can't make exceptions.

also, the student and the dorm is not my problem either. the dorm have their own techs and are fully capable of googling what a wireless site survey is and how to go about getting one performed for their network.

i also don't spoon feed other tech's. and i definatly don't give advice to other techs that I don't know - mainly because they are (especially new ones) all every opinionated and think they are the greatest thing to networking since sliced bread.

i only go out of my way to get involved if i know the person. reason: i have been ignored many times and even burnt are few times --> I learnt my lesson.

i know - i am a meanie - but it's the only way - otherwise users will walk all over you and call you a sucker (behind you back!)
