Apart from the negligable entries above, i would have to say it does sound like a hardware problem. Try swapping out your video card, or leave it onboard and test your comp that way.

Staying with the video, have you checked your directx??? that has been known to cause all sorts of problems ... just a thought :)

Next time it happens, try and take note of what you were doing, how long the computers been up and what programs -you- have started. Between that information and hijackthis log, and this forum we should locate the problem rather quickly.... hopefully :p

I go with the earlier comment that the PSU is on the fritz.. judging from the specs you running out of safety margin on the PSU specs.. ie: getting close to the limits the poor thing probably loses regulation and the BIOS shuts it down.. you will still have PS2 power ie why the Numlock still glows (last state for kbd)

the spyware is secondary to your prob..

By "standard" I take it that you mean "generic" that is , "cheap and cheerful"

Some of those generic PSUs don't deliver anything like what they claim.

The only other possibility I can think of would be if you had a very "dirty" mains power supply.

Ok, perhaps Neglected to mention, that I run dual processors, and such on this machine. And I have managed to fix the error of the system crashing. Apparently, when i decided that i want to increase my graphics frame rate, by installing "Omega Drivers" for my card, they manually overclocked the card. This was not expressed in the readme however. After reverting to the new official drivers and catalyst for my graphics card everything seems to be running smoothly. Thanks for all the help guys!

You really do need to replace that PSU with a good, High Quality, unit. 300 watts is barely capable of delivering stable voltages on an average pc. Dual processors, dual hard drives, dual cd-rom drives, how many fans do you have besides the Cpu coolers(that are high performance as well)?

I reccomend a 500 watt or better PSU with Dual or Triple Cooling fans, Und3ertak3r hit the nail right on the head:

This is like putting a lawn mower engine in a Bus. It may push it down the road but it will never be a hot rod and will quickly wear out and over heat. A computer PSU is in all actuality a digital "Switch Mode" device that will shut down, without warning, in the event of an overload. I really don't think you have ever pulled the PSU and removed its cover to clean it right. (I do this regularly on my computers) Just spraying compressed air through the little slots and fans will only compact the dirt against the many heat sensitive devices inside its chassis resulting in a blanket of insulation to hold the heat in.

Do what you want, but we are experts in this field.

Well, I did ask you if you were overclocking :p it is a problem I have come across several times, particularly with video cards. I appreciate that you did not know that the Omega drivers automatically overclocked your card. That is very bad, and thanks for the warning. My approach has always been to start with the factory defaults and gradually increment, checking for stability each time..................remember that you are dealing with multiple elements and you need to achieve balance for your particular configuration.



Und3ertak3r and aeallison are spot on about your existing power supply. As it is a "generic" type and has been overstressed it is probably not delivering anything like its claimed 300watts.

I just bought a couple of inexpensive cases ($75) this Saturday, and they both have 400watt PSUs, the server case has a 500watt supply.

If you think of your total investment in that system, a good quality PSU is really something that you need.

Okay, I guess my advice to change the PSU was not accepted and you think the only problem here is Omega drivers. As the other guy's have mentioned, you are overloading your machine and I can tell you I've seen this a few times before where the inadequate power supply finally dies with a surge and takes a motherboard or harddrive with it. Your call, though.

After years of experience with Omega drivers I know that Trinidad offers his Omega drivers with the options for overclocking but doesn't supply them overclocked by default. That's purely a customer decision and I'll take the heat to suggest it was your decision too.
Also, you might have had the "VPU Recover" option enabled which on some system leads to lockups/crashes.

Go to Control Panel Ã* System Ã* Advanced Ã* Startup and Recovery Settings Ã* System failure and uncheck the Automatically restart option. Check the attached picture for the visuals.

I know the above particular procedure refers to Boxes that auto-restart when Windows has unstable issues especially in hardware. Hope it will help you determine the problem at least. If this will change the scenario, you will receive the Windows B.S.O.D. (XP version) and get the details from there.

Otherwise, it will still probably fall in the HARDWARE problem, especially with AMD Athlon BoX (about the heat-thing, they are famous in this issues). To give you an example, one friend of mine got his AMD Athlon and enjoys it for a couple of weeks. It was a typical summer season our country when suddenly the AMD BoX just died instantly. Mad and sad, he went to the tech supp of the vendor and had it checked, the CPU and Board was toasted! The solution, either 1) buy a VERY VERY HUGE FAN and the vendor will replace the CPU and BOARD or 2) have an Intel P-IV package instead. I had loved my good old AMD 586 but it was a real SAD story for the Athlon…

Ok went out and purchased a 350watt power supply and installed it. My system performance has greatly improved, and everything seems to be running much more smoothly.

Good Luck. I can't understand why you insist on underpowering your system but its your money, your call. The best computer system in the world is only as good as its weakest link. The difference in price from a generic 350w psu is about $5 to $20 USD. I went to Http://www.tigerdirect.com and they have a 500W PowMax Anodized Aluminum PSU (aluminum = better cooling) with dual fans, including temperature sensing fan controllers that adjust fan speed to regulate heat (this feature alone I would pay 50 bucks for) for $49.99 USD plus shipping.

I think I am going go and replace the motor in my Bus with a brand new 3.5 hp Briggs and Stratton and finally get rid of the old 3 hp motor.

I may never understand this one... sheesh! :confused:
