Sounds a bit like the problem I have, since installing XP 2 update, I don't have a start button, taskbar or desktop, a background, and of course, no control panel, any ideas??

qualityco, you should have started a new topic...can you get to system restore at all? also, google "Recovery Console"...

Sorry, AxessTerminated, I thought I had started a new topic, I spent 2 hours trying to find out how, and I'm still not sure. A few people have suggested system restore, but I don't know where to find it.
