Actually guys.. this isnt the first request for tis sort of thing on this site.. and yes there are some teachers who will organise this sort of experiment..
It teaches the Students many things..
First is how to use a Search engine like www.google.com
they will get the basics of malware removal (you know there are some basics that hardly change..the specifics are constantly changing)
also get insight into the culture of the code writters..
mind I am suprised that the expeiment is being run on a networked PC.. I dont care if the OS is operating under VMware.. with or with out Deepfreeze (that is not a confidence boost)..
The PC should be stand alone.. and use your poison from there.. though I prefer to use Ghost to image my system.. in this experiment I would have two images.. A clean Image.. and a dirty image..that is the fully infected machine.. so when the experiment is finished.. the machine will be almost as clean as the day it was built..well the day the clean image was made..
But NEVER RUN AN INFECTED PC ON ANY NETWORK

I dont doubt that these experiments are done, I have taken part in a few like it (currently in one using boot disks) but his explinations, and lack of understanding/procedure makes me think he is full of it and wants the info to hose somone box.

Umm... he is lying, because I am in the A+ cert class in my school, and we have one of the best A+ classes in the country, as we always have at least one or 2 students go to become state champions in computer repair, and we've also had a national champion, and the class has only been at my school 4-5 years. And we do NOT go over finding the best free AV's, nor do we test destructive virii on computers. Yeh, we bug the hardware and mess around to see if people can fix it, and we do talk about virii and AV's and norton ghost and all, but we don't do anything as obsurd as justanewb is talking about...

hey duck,
your point is irrelevant. just becasue your teacher doesnt cover it doesnt mean it doesnt happen. Maybe your teacher should look into it, it will sure as hell make it a better program, especially in todays workd where malware is the casue of many problems you will face. WTF? there is a computer repair championship? my "championship" award is not getting fired lol.
and how good can an A+ class be really? its the basics of computer, big deal. most people consider A+ over rated becasue of its simplicity, and the fact that it never expires.
oh, and doesnt Ms.M teach a class that explores this type of thing? Id like her opinion on the matter.

Lol well im not the best student and I am not good at explaining things. I know what a firewall is and everything, I know what viruses are and what they do. This again goes back to the "I am no good at explaning things"
It is hard for me to exactly express what im thinking.
And I meant crazy fire walls. As in Firewalls that are good and yea...
I would also like to thank ByteWrangler for giving me suggestions for good AntiVirus software instead of just going into flame mode.
-
I would have given you suggestions for good software, had you asked for it. but remember...thats what your "experiment" is for, I didnt want to ruin the suprise ;)
-
Lol then may I ask for suggestions for good free anti virus software?
-
hmmm... did I not just say that we DO talk about such things? My point was that my teacher, and I would suspect many teachers, would not let students put virii on school computers..
but I'll swallow my pride and admit that I don't know everything, especially on teacher's teaching habits...

sure. AVG is awesome. Adaware, spybot s & d are both good. MS (formaerly Giant) is good but does have some false positives, but it also provides active scanning which the previous do not(adaware does in the paid for version). Stinger is excellent for virii removal tool(just be sure to have it updated).
Symantec/norton is bloatware and I hate it. Mcafee is decent in my opinion.
Sygate is a good firewall. I ahve heard good things about pandas antivirus software.
duck: Its cool that you talk about it, but it is not unheard of to infect computers for research (Im almost positive Ms. Mittens does this in one or more of her classes) and i have done it in the past. I just dont believe this particular poster becasue of the way it was presented and the lack of precausion by the teacher) if you have a spare box take it off the network and hose it. I have 3 computers next to me on their own mini netowkr circulating garbage between them with ethereal running so I can watch what traffic they creat (I like this sort of thing) its fun and you learn alot. then Ill remove it all (or just reimage if I get bored lol)

Oh yea and that is actually the reason we got into this subject, the teacher claims that 90% of the techs he knows that he talks to get most of their customers having problems including such ware. So we should find out how to repair computers from things like viruses. He also pointed at the whole thing about removing most spyware as a business and how it can cause legal problems, due to the fact that people agree to things like this when a program is first installed. But he thinks we should explore this anyways, because it goes to the whole infection subject.
