I wonder, though... what is/was her main motivation? Getting her point across, or getting good grades?

If she wanted to get her point across, she obviously did - she managed to turn an ant into an elephant, and definitely got her point across as it is yet another meaningless thing that can divide this country. Without the bad grade, she wouldn't have been able to get her point across. So in this case she should be thankful for the bad grade.

Or did she want a good grade, and is that why she is upset? Then that's too bad... all she had to do was use the search/replace function. In this case, she was just plain stupid: if all she wanted was a good grade, she could have easily gotten it...

Sooooooo... that leads me to go with the first option: getting her point across. And she did. But that's still not good enough?

What do you expect from a Community College. I assume the papers were going to be published online by the teacher so everyone in class could "participate". This is where I think some censorship would take place. He said "it would offend others in class", do Jews and Russians etc.. get upset at a paper published on the holocaust? Grow up! That screams of his personal beliefs.


Now, do we have the exact copy of the transcript, guidelines of the Term Paper etc...?

If he said to write a paper on the economic influence of India on Sri lanka and you write a paper on the attempt to define the structure of matter. Yes, IMHO you deserve failing grade.


She could've been clever and used Greek letters to define God. Lools like they both tried to make points. I'd bet money the guy is not practicing any religion, he's no shaman, just a wild guess.

I think Negative has this pinned down. She was trying to prove a point that she could do whatever she wanted. She was given a simple instruction (SIMPLE) to use that topic, but not use the word god, and she couldn't follow that. I've heard time and time again that college isn't about what knowledge you come away with but instead the concepts. A company will retrain you to do stuff they way they want you to do. You need to learn how to follow directions above all. She failed in that aspect.

Depends on what kind of paper... in most of Europe, the Jewish lobby has managed to outlaw negationism, more particularly Holocaust denial. Nothing wrong with that (the outlawing, that is - although it's a little childish) if you ask me, but apparently a lot of people do get upset by words... usually, those people's cries for freedom of speech are heard the loudest :)

I'm willing to bet she could've written a paper on the The Holocaust of World War II and would've been graded way better....................... How's that for people being "offended".

Shouldn't a teacher in an English class grade the English language and the structure etc..? Example: The paper should be graded on the merits of your command of the English language/English Grammar and the context it was used, not the views and opinion of the content. However God/god is in the English dictionary and is widely accepted in the academic community. Right?

I always believed pet peeve's should have no barring on education and have no place in the class room. Inserting that BS into the curriculum falls out of their job skill.

Well I don't think that teacher's contract will be renewed...............he has compromised his employers through his own stupidity.

There are now zealots with lots of funds and some hotshot lawyers on the case...........that will cost the woman nothing and the college plenty.

It almost makes me wonder if it wasn't a set-up?

Anyway if I were the Dean/Principal I would fire him for gross professional stupidity. He should have realised that the topic was untenable with such a restriction, and refused to allow it in the first place. Hey it was an ENGLISH paper wasn't it, not POLITICAL SCIENCE or THEOLOGY ?

Again, HISTORY will tell you that America was colonised largely by Christians or people from Christian backgrounds.

As for people "being offended" , they don't need college, they need a rehab unit and counselling.

On the subject of offending people, this guy has not only offended Christians, but Moslems and Jews as well, as all are monotheastic religions.

As for Hindus, Bhuddists, Shintoists, Taoists and Jains they tend to follow a "live and let live" policy.

Atheists are mildly amused, agnostics "aren't sure" and the rest couldn't give a rat's a$$?

I forgot to mention that in English it is considered correct to refer to a monotheastic God as "God" because it assumes the status of a proper noun.

Polytheastic "gods" take the lower case unless you refer to them by name. (Thor, Odin etc)

I think that the Enlish teacher could do with some lessons himself :D

I keep wondering why she only made it an issue after receiving the grade she knew she would get MONTHS ago already (somewhere in April)...

And I'd certainly like to hear the other side of the story - all there is to find is her side. Maybe it was one of those "Try to write a paper about computers without using the word "computer", "pc",..., kinda assignments" :D
Oh, and I believe the assignment was to write a research paper...

That's not entirely correct...
A monotheistic god in English is a god. The monotheistic god in English is God. Both can be used, but what you can't do is say a God - unless you're a polytheists and referring to one of your g/Gods.

Belive it or not Negative I agree with you on this one. But I would take it one step further and say that both sides are wrong. The teacher should not have forbidden the use of the word God Capitalized, I do see this as a freedom of speech infringement. However the girl should have followed instructions and written the paper per the professor's standards. The girls solution should have been to take the issue up to the school Administration at the onset of the assignment. If her right to use the word "God" was still denied, well....we've seen time and again that this is what lawyers are for. Who knows, maybe she could get the ACLU to help her out........NAH!!! Seriously though if this paper were being written about "gang bang sex parties", the girl would probably have been alowed to quote all types of obsenities in describing the colorful language used during the performance. And all of this would have been protected under freedom of speech and artistic license.
