I bought a copy of Linspire a while back just to see if it had any potential for knocking MS products off their perch as an "off the shelf" alternative.

I must say that I was rather impressed, and am not surprised at this development.

The purpose of this distro is to de-geekify Linux, and make it comparable to Windows and MacOS. It is something your granny or anyone totally new to computers could use with equal ease to Windows or Mac.

It is basically a preconfigured, extensively GUIfied Linux that is "load and go". As such it is a viable competitor to Windows and Mac.

True Linux afficionados will throw up their hands in horror, or say "but I can do that with my XYZ distro". If they do, they have totally missed the point. The object of the exercise is to "bring Linux to the masses" in a form that is directly competitive with Windows and Mac. As in "command lines are not allowed" ;) and it must work straight out of the box on default settings.

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops.........................
