I'm certain that with the proper security routines in place, they could have acctualy prevented the hacks. But then again, I think the whole thing is stupid, the police has no place in this. The kids should be punished, but not tried under the patriots act!

I based my comments on the sort of stuff we read about over here. Usually the issue is dress code, smoking, and drinking. In the UK you can buy cigarettes at 16 and alcohol at 18, so this is quite legal for a person still in highschool. :D
This clearly puts the issues firmly in the school discipline area.
Hopefully, the legal authorities will take the view that I have, and basically tell the highschool that it is their problem. After all, the absence of any damage or malicious activity is not going to encourage them to take it very far?

Culture is a lot different here in the U.S. I lived in Cambridge for a year or so and the only problem I ever had was the pubs closed at 10.
I don't ever recall seeing police or reading about "Big Crimes" Except IRA news. Here we charge little girls with assault with a deadly weapon for throwing a rocks at a boy. (You've read the thread)

it's a shame (but sadly a fact) that those who don't think as a delinquent would, are considered stupid. the marjority of the students will, im sure, loose some of the freedoms they enjoyed because of this 'dirty dozen'.

What in hell do you call "using monitoring software to spy on district administrators."? this is not the kind of behavior i consider 'creative'.
trust will be replaced by a totalitarian rule on these public networks and these same idiots will be screaming 'where's my freedom?'.
these kids and any like them should be permanatly expelled from institutions that use public funds. why should the general public pay to have disruptions to the education of their own children. the parents of these deliquents, who are themselves deliquent, should be forced to pay for a private education (as in a military school).
becomming a responsible part of sociaity is one of the aims of a public school system. if some refuse to learn this then let someone else pay for their education becase i don't want to! 'progresive' thinking will not help to deter this behavior only encourage it and anything it takes is fine with me.

Yes . I am an old fart, but having recently completed five years between college and university, I was never tempted to mess about with any system or part of a system, I was there to study and learn, and had plenty of machines and equipment at home to do with as I pleased. Now on thinking back , I can't remember the college's or university I attended ever having any real problems with so called hackers or script kiddies, mainly due to the students, self regulating the arseholes

These students have been caught persistently violating the school's rules. Even the most brain dead of them should have worked out that they would now be "targets" and under constant surveillance.

Unfortunately, the taxpayer will be faced with the cost of the legal action :(
The part that I find unacceptable is that these students are being supported by their parents, which means that the authority of the school is being challenged by both student and parents.
There is only one solution to that situation, and it is expulsion from the school.

so we have these kids downloading password cracking programs a little porn and who knows what else... from extremely reputable sites no doubt. then plugging into the school 's network. who are they hurting? everyone that's there to get an education when the network goes down or everyone's laptop becomes hacked or infected.
IMHO a high school computer program should not have to shell out big bucks for "industrial strength" administrators. money that should be used for more books and equipment. most of the administration should be part of an advanced class or extra credit program. if students are not going to follow the guidelines laid down by the administration then they shouldn't be trusted with the equipment. making this the school's problem instead of the parent's is really sending the wrong message to these kids. i suppose these parents will blame the companys that fire their kids for doing the same thing in the real world.

Maybe I am just a cynical old fart, but I sense a degree of sabre rattling and gamesmanship here? ;)
As in:
1. Students are in open defiance of the school administration, and are being supported by their parents
2. The school would normally expel them, but the bolshy parents would probably sue?
3. So you give the little toads enough rope to hang themselves, then set the law on them?
4. You can now say to Mr. & Mrs. Cretin: "Take that heap of garbage you spawned out of this school and we will consider dropping the charges.............otherwise he stands a good chance of going to the little house, where his fellow inmates will behave just like they do in the big house" :eek:
I cannot believe that the admins did not let these people do anything other than convict themselves :D

I hope they ncome down hard on these kids. Im all for exploring, but they shouldnt have gotten caught...everyone saying "haha they out smarted the admins, its the admins fault" guess what...they got caught, they were not so good after all huh?
I agree with nihil, its the principle of it all, they knowingly broke the rules and should have been prepared to deal with the conciquences.
