Vista could be like a mix of the Lot. Ce Me Nt
Mind I remember the leadup to the release of Win2k.. I managed a Rc2 version.. it was so clean and a massive difference to the beta I toyed with 9 months earlier.. I suspect that Vista will be a similar deal..
I trust it wont be the Dog that Me turned out to be.. but then it could be worse.. again we hear the same words only from different voices
I full well expect the final version to be much different from the Beta that's out now - hopefully, the 2nd Beta will be a major improvement to the first, but that remains to be seen. I'm undecided at this time as to whether I'm excited about Vista or not - I'm sure we'll be steering clear of it at work for a while (at least until the 1st SP is released for it :D ), but I may give it a whirl for home use. I'm just hoping that all of MS's promises to put security first and such are realized by the time Vista hits the shelves - again, we'll just have to wait and see...
As far as the required hardware is concerned, I am afraid that it's requirements are going to be a bit steep - fancy translucent windows are nice eye candy and all, but to be quite honest, I'm way more concerned with how Vista 'acts' as a secure OS instead of how it 'looks' for the users....

That makes me wonder what the "REAL" hardware requirements are. The problem with ME was that it was a resouce hog, particularly RAM wise. Windows XP also suffered this way, as it does like a lot more resource than Win2000 (it seems to be about the same as WinME, which might explain why people I know who went from Win98x to XP tended to moan like hell, whilst those who had a stable WinME installation did not?).Quote:

Then we get the issue of people update installing a new OS onto old hardware :eek:
1. Check hardware compatibility (which includes resources!)
2. Check you have all the appropriate drivers.
3. Get rid of all those unsupported applications you have from the old OS, or upgrade them as well.
If you cannot satisfy all three:
1. Stay as you are
2. Buy new and work on a migration strategy.

But on a serious note... I can't decide whether I hope that Vista will really, really suck (and hope that Apple and Linux will become more prominent because of it) or if I hope that Vista will actually live up to Microsoft's promises (because I will have to work with it since I'm a tech.)

I still can't see a good reason to run it. There are tons of new "features" which will be ripped up as soon as it hits the market. I expect SP1 out no later than 2 months after it hits the street.
Going on, where is the line for the law of diminishing returns? What does this OS offer that I can't live without?
This is how I went about my eval. Thus far, I see nothing that I need in this pig. I do like the pretty pictures though. Let's not forget that. ;)

The thing is Microsoft want a piece of the online content action, with all the DRM and digital protection Vista will have the content providers fears are being massaged. I bet that when Vista hits the streets XP will be withdrawn. So anyone bying a new system will not have the choise. Other than going to Linux.
Yeah.... each new OS M$ releases consists of a lotta of bugs initially... but they are seen to be improving with time (may be in a couple of years)..
Take for instance, the case, when Windows XP was released.. New and attractive features like System Restore were introduced.. But... by joe.. System Restore utility used to eat up a lot of disk space to make up space for backing up of system files in all the hard drives.. This is the instance when I first upgraded my home box from Win98 to WinXP sometime in Jan2002 ... But alas!!!!! the performance was degraded instead of improving. Though the thumbnail feature of folder display was attractive.... Any how!!! I had to roll back..
But after three years down the road now. .. WindowsXP is said to have improved and become stable. But fellas these were three years...
Cant say... how much time Windows Vistas will take to get ubiquitious ...............
