It's actualy quite amazing how much fuel you can conserve by driving well. I did a driving instructors course years ago, at the begining one of the other pupils was using two full tanks of gas at the weekend, to visit his home, over a 600 mile round trip, by the end of the course he had very nearly halved that. Not only was he saving money on fuel but his journey time had decreased as well.
There are a lot of variables that come into play, but the main ones that come into mind are tire pressure and speed...........I believe you burn up 25% more fuel after 50MPH. I believe that's for the average car. Windows open cause drag, slamming the pedal for acceleration, use of air conditioning, bad oil....

Well..here in Canada...it's around $1.38 a litre...it's jumped almost $0.50 since last week.
That translates into over $6.00 a US gallon.
And we're not even dependant on US oil.

I cant even remember a place that didnt make you pre pay for gas. Not saying your old or anything Deb, but I live in California where noone trusts each other I guess.Quote:

It's never been an issue here, except at a couple of stations, and no one went to those stations. :p Now, it's all of the stations. I've never had to pre-pay at the one I went to today, it sucked.
Wow... do you live in a small town? I could not even think of how many people would of abused not prepaying here... Kind of sad I guess. All the prepay does for me is make me use my debit card. So much easier.Quote:

Yep, I live in a small town...and paying w/ my debit card means I can't go in and talk to the lady that owns the place, and she rocks!
It's not any secret. Imitation gave some good points, car condition and reduction of drag are factors. Mainly though it is a light foot on the gas and brake. Advance observation is a key factor, how many people do you know that drive upto a junction and stop then look then go. When observation on the aproach and an adjustmeant of speed would mean stopping was un-necessary.The same for traffic lights and roundabouts.Quote:

On motorways/freeways smooth changes of speed and direction useing observation again to keep as constant speed as possible, avoid breaking. Why break to avoid a hazard when if you had observed well in advance and adjusted your possition and speed breaking would have been un-necessary. Every time you break you then have to accelerate back to your cruising speed. This uses fuel. What I mean is if you are driving and there is a slower vehicle in front or some other hazard, dont wait untill you up it's arse before you start to look to overtake or avoid, observe the hazard and start planning your route through/past the hazard well in advance. This avoids having to make constant and rapid changes in speed and position.
Smoothness and a constant speed == good fuel consumption and coupled with good observation == faster overall journey times.
Next time your in a car, look ahead to where the road disapears from sight. Then think about where the road goes and what conditions are like on the unseen stretch of road. Can you see something to indicate which direction the road goes, is there a row of telegraph poles, bushes things like this can give you advanced warning of road direction changes. Is there a church steeple in the distant to indecate your aproaching a built up area. Don't just look as far as the road goes look further ahead.
Not sure about Deb exactly, but I live right outside of Atlanta...we hardly ever have to prepay unless it's after dark. Maybe it's just different in the south. Maybe we have more drive offs too, lol.Quote:

Sweet! Thank you Jinxy and !mitationRust for all your advice. I practice most of the things you mentioned, except I tend to have a lead foot on the gas... I do ~80 when I'm going in or out of Atlanta. I'm good about not abusing the brakes though and preparing for things coming up before I get there.Quote:

Lol, my mom is the worst ever. She'll slam on the brakes for no good reason sometimes and piss off everyone on the highway. She also likes to wait for stop signs for turn green... :rolleyes:
