I think the first to do is find out what is in your machine......................motherboard, sound, graphics.
Get "Everest" from here:

Install and run it and let us know.
If you want to run Windows XP and do gaming you would want a minimum of 512Mb of RAM and 1Gb would be preferable.
If you want to continue with Win ME then it will run better with 512Mb
