I cannot remember where I got mine from, but you can get an adapter for a laptop HDD that will let you run it in a desktop. I don't know how much they cost these days, but if you can slave the drive, that could work out seriously cheaper than taking your machine to the shop.
However, it seems like you have more problems than just that. If your BIOS is scrambled or the CD has died. In any case, if you can do your own data recovery that has got to save you thirty quid?
As a general rule, I always try to do data recovery in slave mode, as you are quite correct, doing it in situ writes to the drive at the same time (you don't have the CD option) :eek:
