Try upgrading the firmware for the drive. (Usually found on the manufactures webpage.)

I have had the some problem with my DVD/CD Read/Write drive, but unfortunatly i haven't figured out what causes it. Sicne it doesn't happen often to me i don't have much info on when it happens, but if we have the same problem here are a few things i have noticed.
1) It tends to heppen when i am still using that cd/dvd and try to eject it without stopping it first.
2) It also happens when I have a lot of things running when i try to eject it.
3) Finally i have noticed that if i don't let the disk spin down all of the way b4 ejecting it may happen as well.
These are the only common factors i have noticed when i run into that problem, but maybe it will help you or someone else solve it for both you and i.

Well, JewishIntent do you think 23 hours is enough time to let the CD stop spinning? lol
In general I need a new computer, no questions asked. But right now, I want to fix this computer up since I'm giving it to my lil sister so she can play on it and put as much spyware on it as she wants lol.
But sticking to the issue, devildell, I haven't tried to immediatly take it out, but I suspect that it will. Also I haven't tried in safe mode, simply because I have to disable my video chipset in the startup screen (clueless of how to do this and haven't put effort into this)
EDIT: lol, I randomly decided to try to open the drive again, and it opened lol apparantly it needed 24 hours to stop spinning haha :-D still want to find the solution though so i can fix it (Even if it means buying a new part)

What do you have the jumper setting set to? Do you have a CD-RW installed also?
Well if you only have the DVD installed check to see if its set to master, if it isnt then do so, and if there is a second drive make sure that the dvd drive is the master.
There could also be problems with over heating, So check to see if the drive is getting too hot.
There might be a problem with the Operating System, like malware or a virus.
There are some different things to look for but I think it might be the pin settings that are causing the issue. So give it a look and let me know what you find.

Right mouse click on the drive in question and select UNINSTALL
OK on the prompts
restart the computer..
Issues can include CD Burning software.. ie this is a regular feature with Direct CD and INCD
so you may need to check what new and old software is in the machine.. any old cd burning software may need the flick..
Also check the multi core cable (IDE) any uneven cuts on the plugs, or signs of crush could be a cause of this type of problem..
