Be a little cautious of young Steve's histrionics, but his paper on "The classic DoS attack" might interest you .
Yes it has been around since 28.8 modems to my knowledge. This new guy is a mercenary rather than a stupid skiddie................although about as useless...............garbage like that should be sent to Iraq to help find roadside bombs and landmines ............errr.............first? ;)

And finally, this experience has clearly demonstrated that the days of an Internet based upon mutual trust among interconnected networks has passed. The Internet's fundamental infrastructure MUST BE SECURED before the Net becomes further threatened by increasing levels of malicious attacks. Since this requires irresponsible ISP's — who repeatedly demonstrate that they could not care less — to assume the sorts of local responsibility that they have so far deliberately shunned . . .
I have but two little questions now, first how do you type the vertical bar in order to use those commands specificallly?
this character, I cut and pasted it from the article.Quote:

and also, what are the packets that get sent in this case, is it just random binery or a bit like the code equivilent of white noise, or is it particular random generated code?
Even though this article is a few years old, I would hope that the firewall he paid for has seen the light and plugged this little whole. I am happy that Zone Alarm and always get good feedback about it. Great article if you have a couple of days to read it, I do at the mo.
You know it.Quote:

Hello,
I recently stumbled upon a little more information regarding Mr. 0x80, the hacker interviewed for the article mentioned above.
Read this:
Ha ha ha ha!!! Oh, that's classic!Quote:
Found at: Washington Post Caught in Metadata Gaffe? http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895...06dtx1k0000599
The Washington Post's online arm has apparently been caught in a metadata gaffe that exposed the whereabouts of a 21-year-old hacker who confessed to controlling thousands of compromised PCs for malicious use.
The hacker agreed be interviewed by Washington Post reporter Brian Krebs on the condition that he not be identified by name or home town, but when the article was posted on the newspaper's Web site, an accompanying photograph included metadata that pinpointed the location to Roland, Okla., a small town with a population of 2,842.
The best are the "Slashdotter's" who were commenting on the topic here: http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?s...0&cid=14748871
Oh man, that is karma!! What a dope!

I have a stack of documents from various sources (NIST, Microsoft and NSA) detailing how to clean the metadata out of documents and other files prior to posting to the net or releasing outside the organization.
You would be surprised at what gets left in an image, in a document, whatever.
Hmmmm ... maybe I need to check that photo I stuck in that one thread.
Hmmm,
|||||||||||
It is the first key on the bottom left row. Upper shift and that key. Otherwise it is normally shared with the first key on the top row. You will generally have to hit "ctrl" and "alt" at the same time.
The confusion is that if you set the keyboard to UK English, those two keys can get reversed.
:)
